We ordered my dad a Barnes & Noble Nook as one of his presents this Christmas. It was kind of a "spur of the moment" decision, but definitely something I know he'll love as he is reading CONSTANTLY. I don't think I've ever seen him without a book LOL.

Has anyone heard anything good/bad about the Nook? Does anyone have one? Opinions?

Just want to make sure that we got him the right gift.

Thanks!
Simon :)

Hi Simon,

I know it sounds like I am selling Kindles, but I swear I'm not.

Before you receive your Nook, I would do some research on the subject. There are quite a few reviews out there, so you can get more than one opinion.

Also, Kindle and Nook (or nook, as B&N points out) have their own discussion forums where you can get a great deal of information.

From what I've read, the nook has been rushed to market in time for Christmas and hasnt gotten very high marks. The reviews have been "not so great".

As I said....do some research and see what you think.

Thanks Kevin!

I had NO idea that there were discussion forums about e-readers. I'm gonna check that out right after I post this.

I am aware that the Nook (or nook or whatever... marketing tactics LOL...) was rushed out in time for the holidays, but I also think there are some features that my dad would use a lot, such as being able to download full books in any B&N store and have them automatically delete themselves upon exiting.

The nook owners I've talked to are generally happy with the product, but the one complaint I've heard multiple times is that the battery life is "short" compared to the Kindle. I looked it up online and the difference is 10 days vs. 14 days.

One person (a barista at Starbucks) said that she got spotty 3G connectivity and blamed AT&T. I have yet to look in to it, but I swear we get 3G coverage out here; there are so many people with iPhones, I couldn't really see why we wouldn't.

I'm gonna do some more research.

Thanks Again! :)

Hey Simon,

I think you will find more info as you look deeper.

After B&N announced this feature, they were forced to retract it. Most publishers pitched a fit and would not let them do this.

They also had to retract the thing about "loaning" a book. Most publishers denied this as well. Those that do allow the "loaning" of a book will only allow it to be done once and for a maximum of 14 days.

Dont get me wrong....Kindle is facing some issues with publishers who also offer the audio books. They refuse to allow Kindle to use the "Text to speech" feature as they would lose business.

Just do your research and if you feel that you have made the right choice, then go with it.

Just want you to have as much info as possible.

Wow, I had absolutely no idea! I need to start reading more LOL.

I'm gonna do some more research... :surfweb:

I'm not entirely sure how accurate this is. We are a 2 nook family (dh ordered them early on so ours were in the first shipment). We've already been able to browse through e-books in the store without buying them. Got coupons for free cookies too. :) Haven't tried the lending thing yet, but it does say in the B+N store if an ebook can be lent to another user.

I seriously considered a Kindle for many months. While I am glad I waited and have a nook, but in the end, I don't think either has a major advantage over the other. The nook has some newer bells and whistles, but that's about it. I admit it took me a day or so to get used to using the touch screen. I only use the color touch screen if I am shopping or downloading a new book. Otherwise, it is off and I just use it to change pages. Anyway, both my dd and I are very happy with our nooks. I'm sure your dad will enjoy it as well.

As I've suggested...everyone should do their own research.

You can start with the Nook (or nook) discussion form located here:

Barnes and Noble's Nook Discussion Forums

http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/...-p/eBooks_Help

Or visit the Kindle discussion forum located here:

Amazon's Kindle Discussion Forums

http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum/ref=sv_kinh_6

If you Yahoo or Google search for Nook (or nook) reviews, you will find many.

The NY Times review can be found here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology/personaltech/10pogue.html?_r=3&hp

It's a bit harsh....but it mirrors a lot of what I've been reading.

Again.....all I'm suggesting is that you do some research and find out which product is best for you.
