Barking Dog

I too have a dog that likes to bark. She doesn't bark for hours but enough to annoy people. Usually someone is home though and drags her in.

I agree with the other posters on training. We had a few trainers for my dog and it helped us a lot. Those boxes that emit a high pitched noise? We had NO success with it. It actually annoyed us more than the dog. We use the citronella collar. We've had some success with it. It doesn't stop the barking completely but it helps to keep the barking from being constant. Another hidden feature, after a few spritzes my dog (80lb shepard mix) gets tired and just stops bothering to bark.

I am not saying your neighbor is lying but they might be exagerating. I had a neighbor that complained to the police about a dog barking constantly. There was no constant barking from any local dog (at that time). The guy just thought dogs should be seen and not heard. Dogs bark, that's what they do. If there is constant barking, then something should be done. I live next to two little dogs that bark at every moving dust particle. I can't even begin to describe how annoying it is.

Good luck. If you find anything that helps, please let me know.

I'm not sure what you've heard about the citronella collars, but they do work. Or should I say they work to do what they are designed to do. I have one for our dog, who is a barker. She is very large chested (no comments from the peanut gallery :lmao: ) and has the deepest bark which is so loud. She barks at anything that walks by, which makes it hard form my husband, who works at home, to hear. We bought a citronella collar, which worked, but I really didn't like punishing her for barking at anything. I don't want her barking for extended periods of time or after I've given her the "quiet" command, but I do want her to bark a couple times when someone comes to the door. Of course your situation is different since you are not home, but I did want to comment on the citronella collars.

I agree about talking to the neighbor and letting them know that you're aware of the issue and that you're working on finding a solution. I think people are going to be more compassionate if they know you're not ignoring the problem.

Do you have a subdivision newsletter? You could always look there for a pet-sitter. Mine is loaded with kids looking for little jobs after school!

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to finally have a yard and then have it cause another set of issues.

Keep her inside and find a dog walker or pet sitter to come by and spend some time with them the days you are working. Or there's always doggie daycare! :)

I agree. Hire a petsitter or bring your dog to doggie daycare. The barking may be a sign of boredom or loneliness. The petsitter I use does a lot of work for families who work odd hours or long shifts. She visits the dogs, walks them and give them plenty of attention.

I have a mini dachshund too!
There is a thing from Amazon Called a Super Bark Stop -it is not a collar- I have not used it -it just looked interesting.
Also does she have plenty to do? Have you tried hiding treats in the yard? Stuffing a kong full of food and freezing it?
Good luck!

I miss my dachshund !!!

Maybe a little dog house for outside comfort.
Or try the collar as a belt

:dog: my cinderella princess: is a mini doxie and the trainer we used told me that they are prone to be barkers.

have you introduced your dog to your neighbor :confused3 maybe if she gets acquainted with the neighbors she wont feel so unsettled. you might even ask the neighbor to squirt your dog with a water gun when she is barking. that is what i do to quiet mine down.

Chances are she is probably bored to death. If you don't want to crate her, use an exercise pen. There is a link below that shows a picture. Place in that during the day with some pads on the floor. Buy her a nice little doggie bed. But either an old towel or blanke in there with her. Make sure that you have rubbed the towel all over you. This will leave your scent behind and might give her some comfort. The little doxie in my signature is our smallest doxie. She weighs about six pounds too. She also has the biggest mouth of the bunch.

These are my girls, Lady (the big hound) and Ginger the 6 pound "I think I'm a Great Dane" Doxie. I would love to go talk to the neighbors about this, but they didn't leave a name or address so I have no idea who left it. I'm sure most of her problems are boredome/seperation anxiety. She does follow me from room to room which I have gotten use to. If she's not under my feet, I'm worried about her. I'm sure she hears cars coming and going, kids playing and there is still lots of construction going on in our neighborhood as this is a brand new subdivision.
I have an exercise pen from when we lived in our apt/condo so I could take her outside and let her have sun and play. Her bark is high pitched and will make your ears bleed so I do feel for the neighbors, I just had no idea that is was a problem. I wish they had come to me or at least left their name so I could talk to them and find out if there was a certain time of day or what. I'll just keep trying. I don't go back to work until Sat so I'll have to come up with something in the next two days. Thanks again for all the great suggestions and replies. I knew I could find ideas here.

As Cesar Milan says....

"Walk, walk, walk, your dogs".;) They need to rid themselves of energy. An exercise pen is not for exercise. It is a large crate...so is a backyard. Dogs need to walk away from the house, on a leash with you.

Also when you moved you should have continued the same routine as in the apartment and then slowly moved to letting the dogs have the run of the house...like months.

Too much freedom with no exercise leads to "stuff". It is reversible.
Heck DH and I are home everyday and our dog Butters barks when he is outside. It is because he is bored.

ITA.

My oldest daughter comes home this Friday from college - with a cat. I am very allergic to cats.

Every hole in my head itches and swells up, so if I'm MIA for about a week, just know I'm in a hospital with tubes in my facial orifices fighting for my life.

Oh, okay - so it's not that bad. I'm still a dog person. :teeth:

Hmmm, spending Thanksgiving in ICU. Tell you what, I'm a nurse, in exchange for the help here , I'll come take careof you. Deal? :thumbsup2

FIRST let me say, i don't think there is anything wrong with bark collers. if you think it'll help, by all means go for it. it'll eventually teach the dog not to bark so much.

secondly, i think your best bet would be to go and ask your vet what to do. they might be able to help you out more than anyone.

i don't really have any other advice. dog barks can be annoying, trust me! lol. my parents' dog, for some reason, barks at everything. barks at the wind, barks at the leaves, barks at anyone who walks by, barks when someone is leaving the house. and he's a small dog......you'd think he'd have a cute little bark but no.......he's got this loud obnoxious bark.

and my neighbor's dog is a big dog, with a big bark. and my neighbors, the considerate people they are, let him out at around 2am and all he does for 15 minutes is bark at nothing. and how convenient is it that my room is right next to their house...so i get woken up everyday at 2am.

Deal! :thumbsup2

Seriously... I may be PMing you for some OTC antihistamine advice!

there is a new collar out called the Gentle Spray collar. It comes with a scentless refill or a citranella(sp?) refill. We sell them at work (I work at a doggy daycare, boarding, grooming facility so they are frequently used). When the dog barks, it sprays up a burst of air that hits the bottom of their mouth. Its harmless and startles the dog as opposed to shocking the dog. After a couple encounters with the sudden burst of air out of nowhere, the dog generally picks up that when he barks, the collar will spray him and he'll stop. We use them everyday and out of the 4 months I've been working there, I've only seen it NOT work successfully on 2 dogs. We order ours from a company called Premier...here's a direct link to the product: Gentle Spray collar

Ohhhh...how sweet !!! I love dachsies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please re-think the citronella collars- they work wonders on problem barkers! They don't make a mess, but spray a very fine mist of citronella near the dog's face. The sound of the spray and the smell (non-toxic and not harmful) stops the barking. I have used it on dozens of dogs (foster home for a rescue group) and I haven't had a dog yet that it hasn't worked on.
