I don't know whose dog it is, it is on the street over from mine. It's been barking over a half hour! I'm going nuts-can't call 911, who do I call?

I start at Yelling at the DOG SHUT UP. see if the family takes it in.
If not, I have called and told them I don't know if you can't hear it but your dog is howling and we can not sleep. Then Tell them I will call the patrol units.

I call the non emergency no. if it contunues over other nights.
Our towns have animal ordinances and if you keep track of the hours, how long it goes on and how many nights it is a violation.

But, they all know me as a retired local law officer, so they see me and know I am not happy to be in PJs on their doorstep. It can be kids in the pool, speakers out side, the dogs, the drunk husband pounding on my door trying his key to get in....

I walked him home and told the wife to put a if lost return to tag on him....
But, we are all family cousins and long time residents.
If they have a child missing, teen problem, or fire they call me. Try the fire dept first I tell them.

But it is a volunteer company and I generally have the fire out when they get there. A grill fire, stove., car in the driveway. etc. A few times I had chimney fires raging and no one home.....

Getting too old now though.

I would suggest going over & seeing who he belongs to. Knock on the door and sweetly ask them if they could let him in. If your in your PJs and look real tired, it might help lol

Do you have a listing for your local dog warden? If so, that is who I would call..

If not, I would call the non-emergency number for your local police department..

I would not go out at this time of night and get into a confrontation with someone over their barking dog..

Good luck! :)

Why cant people just be neighbor-ly? I dont know if its because I live in a big city or what, but around here if you call the police about a dog barking they would laugh at you. They are busy working.

Well the best route is the dog warden - because unfortunately a lot of folks aren't "neighborly" these days.. Even up here in the boon docks, I saw a nasty, nasty confrontation over a barking dog a few years ago.. What was the end result? They had to call the Sheriff's Department to break up the fight.. Might as well cut out the middleman..:rotfl:

Unfortunately, I think a neighborly type person would hear their dog barking and do something about it within a couple of minutes, especially late at night.

It seems to me that the type who lets their dog keep on barking, even late at night, is already showing themselves to be a don't care about anyone else, hostile personality.

Ya think? ;) Exactly why I would not approach them about it at this time of night..

I think maybe they are just asleep. I mean if you have a dog, you must be able to tune out his barking right? I dont have a dog, so I could be wrong.

Im a little worried about the dog. He must be cold. :sad1:

I think its because we all live on top of each other. You have to be neighborly around here. I just can't imagine calling the police over a dog. I honestly dont think they would come.

OP youll have to tell us how it goes. Maybe the dog will tucker himself out. Hes got to stop eventually.

Our dog is nine years old. A beautiful, big, happy, happy dog. There is no way to tune her out if she starts barking. No way possible. The neighbors are either kooks, passed out drunk, or simply not home so they don't know.

People leave their barking dogs out in the yard because THEY don't want to put up with them. :headache: As if I do! If I wanted a barking dog, I'd go to The Barking Dog Store in the mall and buy my own. Oh wait.....There is no such store because no one wants a barking dog! I've called the police before. Here, you get a warning, then maybe a second warning that's really a citation and after that they fine you. The other day my next door neighbor's bog barked the whole time I was trying to nap and I felt like crap. I didn't want to listen to that dog. They usually keep her inside, but I think they had her outside because they wanted the baby to sleep. I like the neighbors and know them, and finally had to go over. They opened the door and I said, "I'm not feeling too good and I've been trying to sleep...." I didn't get any further and they started apologizing and went and got the dog. But if I hadn't known them, I would have first yelled at the dog (hoping the neighbors would take the hint) and then called the police if they ignored my big old hint. If you want a barking dog, keep it inside or get some acreage.

I don't live in that big of a city but around here they would laugh too. I have joked before that the standard piece of advice on the dis to every problem out there is to call the police. One person was pissed off because their neighbors tomato plants were on their side or the property line and got advice to call the police. SHEESH.

I just found out today that at my sons 16th birthday party one of our neighbors (MOM IS WITCHY) called the cops at 8 at night because a band was playing. The cops did come, talked to my 12 year old daughter, never asked to speak to an adult or came in the house and just left. There wasn't a thing they could do about it and they didn't even care. I am surprisedd they even came at all, but talking to my 12 year old gives you an idea how serious they take stuff like that around here. If I called about a barking dog I am sure they would hang up on me.

We have all sorts of dogs in our neighborhood, they bark. I have double paned windows though so I don't care. I guess if you can't get back to sleep I would go wake the neighbors myself but I wouldnt call the police out thats for sure.

When I worked for the PD in the city I currently live in we would get barking dog complaints. Most officers would roll their eyes and take their sweet time getting there. Then they'd drive around with the windows down and if they couldn't hear a dog they left the area. A few times when there was nothing going on and the dog would still be outside they would go and knock on the door and tell the homeowner to let the dog in. That didn't happen often.

Still, there isn't much else to do so if it is bothering you and you can't sleep I would call the police non-emergency number.

I take barking dog calls all night. I work for a 311 call center which handles animal control calls so, in Charlotte at least, there are plenty of people who will call the police (or animal control) about a barking dog. If you don't have an animal control force (or one that's not available 24 hours a day), non-emergency police would be your next course of action. Lucky us, we take those calls, too. :sad2:

I guess in mytown in the "Live Free or Die State" we are just different. My town does not even have a noise ordinance - so there is nothing the police can/will do about any obnoxious noise at anytime of day or night. Fireworks, barking dogs, blaring music, practicing garage bands doesn't matter. We have a small town newletter that is printed monthly and usually around 4th of July - we get reminders in the newsletter that we do not have a noise ordinance and not to call about neighbors setting off fireworks, etc.

Unless this was a constant occurance and I had spoken to the neighbor with no results I wouldn't call the police.
