Hey guys, congratulations to all who racesd this past weekend. I have been down and out since Sunday night but wanted to post m a race report from my Broad Street run Sunday morning. Sorry for postin seperately but I didn't want to jump on other racers reports.

As I sit here two days removed from the Broad Street Run 10 miler, hacking my brains out, I wonder what type of idiot would try and race with bronchitis. I need only to look into a mirror to see the type of idiot I speak of. But I digress…

The weather for the 28th running of the Broad Street Run 10 miler was a nice cool 50 something and not supposed to get above 60 with a tail wind gusting up to 20 MPH. This would be my 11th running of the race and I was hoping for it to be a PR. I was in better shape than any of the previous 10 races and had a lot of speed work behind me thanks to the kids on the track team. However, I was not feeling very good and spent half the night before trying to sleep in the recliner because whenever I lay down the hacking commenced.

So with less than 4 hours sleep, an achy head and questionable sanity I lined up in the 7 minute pace group. The gun goes off and after about a minute I pass under the starting banner. As usual there is the collection of 10 to 12 minute milers who ignore the staging areas and block up the works. I work around the obstacles dodging pot holes, discarded trash bags and clothing and try to settle into a rhythm. Yea right!

I pass mile one in 7:34. My goal for this race was to go under 1:12 but even after the first mile I know that that is not possible; I was having a hard time with relaxing and the chest was tight. OK, let’s just hold the pace and see how things go. Mile 2 passes in 7:20, mile 3 in 7:15, mile 4 in 7:10, mile 5 in 7:12, and mile 6 in 7:03. Mile six always has the most spectators and their enthusiasm always makes this one of the fastest miles. However, I am really hurting here and I have had a couple of coughing fits but onward I push.

The governor (Ed Rendell – our fair cities former mayor and a huge sports fan) of Pennsylvania is always lined up near the Academy of Music high fivin runners and I take my turn as usual. Last year I high fived the gov., ran another 100 feet, turned to the right, and puked (the result of running a 2 minute PR for 10 K in the middle of a 10 mile race). Not this year, but I was not doing well and needed to regroup. Fortunately there is no place to pull off and walk here so I press on. Mile 7 goes by in 7:33, then 8 in 7:22 and the wheels come off. Listen very carefully and you can actually hear the screeching as I careen onto the side walk for a gasping walking break and coughing fit that produces some none to pleasant dry heaves.

After my little respite in mile nine, which according to Garmin went by in 8:07 but Garmin does not track how long I was coughing and heaving on the side walk, I gather myself for the final push. I honestly cannot remember passing the sports complex (home of the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers) in mile nine but I must have because there is the naval yard. The finish line is less than half a mile and I dig even deeper until I pass over the mats to that wonderful chirping only a road racer knows of a race chip registering the finish of yet another race. I do not notice my time because, wait, here it comes, uuuuuugh. Nothing, so I take three steps to a clear area to the right and again; uuuuuugh and a cleansing occurs.

I finish the race in 1:15:26 (chip time) but really feel bad. Happy I pushed through but physically feel really bad and now I have to go and coach the track team at our regional meet (these last 6 to 7 hours). Next time I feel that crappy before a race my wife has instructions to tie me down and hit me over the head with a cast iron frying pan until I am unconscious.

Post script: please excuse the rambling nature of this RR as I am heavily medicated with codeine and antibiotics right now.
 
Oh, GG, you ALWAYS have adventures when you race!! Don't know if I should praise you or not for this latest one, though. :eek: Fantastic bronchitis time.:sick: But, puh-leeeeezzee, take care of yourself so that there will be future, more comfortable races!! :goodvibes Anne

GoofyGuy - Glad you finished the race; sorry you felt so crappy. The winner actually set a new course record, finishing the 10 miles in 45:14 (the old record was 45:16). It was a little cool and windy. Did you go to the Expo?

Sadly, we had a fatality at the race. A 28 y/o martial arts instructor finished in 1:21- something, then collapsed and died. They don't know why yet.
