The point of bleeping as little as the word as necessary is so we know what the word is supposed to be but they also pass the minimum threshold for the censors.

If there is a show you don't want to see because of the language (or don't want your kids to see) it should be you that does the censoring at your end, not the television networks doing it at theirs.

"Naughty" words don't actually hurt anyone and I think way to many people over react to language.

Agree 100%! Never understood why it's perfectly acceptable to use another word with the same exact meaning as the "forbidden" word.

Self respecting people do not talk like TV characters. However, if the shows keep showing/airing it, then people will start to believe that is what real life is like and will talk similarly. Respect comes before rights.

Exactly how does MF work its way into a conversation? Or F? Yet some of these shows that is all they ever say. If you took it out of the dialogue there would be nothing said. What is the point? They are mad? Concerned? Excited?

No, I do not live under a rock. Perhaps I live in a place that has greater respect for themselves than where you live. I find that language offensive, and I insist that people do not use that language in front of me. Never had a complaint about it my insistence either. Self respecting people do not debase themselves in that manner, although with what some people here post, I can see how you may see otherwise.

It's not just a word. It is a statement of what you think about yourself. If you choose to listen to those words, then you do that, but do not inflict it on me. There are laws against obscenities, and they ought to be enforced vigorously.

Like a previous poster stated... if you don't like the language on a certain show, don't watch it. We think we live in a "free" society. The U.S. is one of the most repressed countries in the world. You can't open your mouth without some imposing their beliefs on you.

I agree that some entertainers use nasty language more than needed. However, comedians like Sinbad or Jeff Foxworthy can make me laugh without using one bad word. Television should be rated like the movie industry. If you don't want to watch an R-rated show... CHANGE THE STATION!!!

The one thing that makes me laugh is this... parents won't let their children watch a specific movie because they might see a female breast!! But then they allow them to play the latest "shoot 'em up" on Xbox... or maybe watch a movie with people getting blown to bits. Well, at least they didn't see that dreaded ****ie!! (Wow, the word b00bie was actually censored!!)

I'm going to start writing letters to Disney Co. to remove Donald Duck from the character list. I think children will be psychologically harmed if they see a duck walking around without pants.

Just because we hear it everywhere doesn't mean that it necessarily should become acceptable. Why should society lower it's standards of respect just because everyone's doing it? Like a pp who talked about a boss who uses profanity...I personally think it's very disrespectful, where all of a sudden did it become ok to talk to and among employees that way?
The media is certainly contributing to the culture.
I personally, don't agree with censorship in the media, I do have a choice to filter what I and my family watches, listens too...and I do filter it somewhat for my kids.

Before you think I'm on my high horse, I do watch my share of trash tv, and nothing still shocks me like Jersey Shore. It's hard to even follow a conversation or argument sometimes because there are so many bleeps. But that doesn't mean I go around talking like that myself or allow my kids to.

On a personal note, I have no problem with "harsh language". In fact, I kind of like it. That isn't to say I run around cursing like a drunk sailor, but I enjoy a colorful metaphor, as Captain Kirk called them, bandied about.

I doubt you'll answer this, since you don't answer anything I ask you (perhaps I'm on ignore? ), but what if I found something you said offensive? Should I demand that you don't say it?

And, where do you draw the line? If I never say the F word (which I don't), but sometimes say damn or ****, does that mean I have self respect, or not?

TV does not dictate peoples behavior. It reflects society norms and trends. So while many people you know do not use that language, it may be appropriate for a particular character. Can you imagine watching the Sopranos where there was no cursing? It would be out of character and make the show much less realistic.

The beauty of the TV these days is there are hundreds of channels to choose from. And I tape all my shows and watch them later so I don't have to watch the commercials.

I am not easily offended though so a few curse words don't effect me.

I had a boss that cursed a lot. In fact, he mentioned it to me in my interview. I said as long as you don't curse at me, we are good. He never did. But he would get frustrated about things and the curses would fly. He was really good at it too. Very colorful metaphors!

I'd feel horrible, but mine know not to. I guess I'm thankful they listen to me more than they do to teens who happen to curse in public, or a show they see on tv. I try not to curse around them, though sometimes a d or sh word pops out, but I know I cannot hide them from all words I don't like. That's why I teach them what is ok in our family.

By the same token, just because some people don't like something, doesn't make it unacceptable. I think the critical aspect is that there are shows that appeal to people who are offended by such language, and shows that appeal to people who are not offended by such language, in fair measure vis a vis how much each audience contributes to the key metrics of the business.

I don't like either hip hop nor opera - probably finding each twice as offensive as some folks in this thread find raw language. Yet, those two music genres endure despite my not liking them.

Has anyone ever seen some of the shows overseas? Our TV is cookies and cream compared to some of that programming.

That being said, I think this country is too PC. Everyone is so worried about offending someone else. For example, since when is it a "Holiday Tree" instead of a "Christmas Tree"?

But back to TV, if you don't like what you see, change the channel or turn it off. To me, censoring language on TV is like a grocery store only selling oranges because some people don't like apples. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

There are also laws about certain sex positions being illegal, so in your mind they should enforce those as well right? Also, in Mass, Quakers and Witches are banned from the state.. should they enforce that as well? Times have changed, and honestly I dn't think I'd like to see my tax dollars going to prosecuting someone who chooses to use foul language. There are more important things out there to pursue. If you don't like the language on TV, turn off the TV. If you don't like people cussing in public, avoid crowds. It really is that simple.

I haven't read the whole thing so someone might have mentioned this, but He**'s Kitchen is one that I have noticed they not only bleep as usual, but now they put a bubble over the mouth. When visiting my son out of the states, they don't beep or cover those words, and that makes it hard ot watch the show with kids there for me.

I couldn't agree with you more. A Christmas tree is a symbol of Christmas, not of holidays in general. I also agree with everything else you said, but this jumped out at me

I adamantly believe the laws pertaining to vulgarity should be more vigorously enforced. When you enforce the small stuff, the bigger stuff happens less.
