I guess I think it's tacky not to wear shoes in a grocery store.

Could be worse...everyone could be wearing Crocs.

That is disgusting! For the people who are wondering what the health risk is, the OP said the girl had the shoes in her hands and then was reaching into candy bins. That's poop in the candy!

Was she rubbing her hands all over the bottom of the shoes?

Honestly, while I wouldn't go barefoot in a grocery store, I don't see carrying ones shoes as the ultimate in poor sanitation. I agree with all the others that said there have probably been a lot more dirty hands in those candy bins (and handling the produce as well).

That said, I cannot believe the manager could compare that to a person with a service animal. I don't recall losing your sight being a choice.

I we watched how many people DON'T wash their hands after leaving the bathroom, we could probably assume that there is poop in the candy anyway!

As someone who is actually going blind the comment about the seeing eye dog just pisses me off to no end. There are so many ignorant people out there. I hope you do report her especially about that part.

My .02:

The commnets about the seeing eye dogs were terrible and unjustified.

As others have said clean hands aren't all htat common anyway (unfortunately) so it really is not a big deal the kdis was carrying the shoes.

I have never understood people being grossed out by other's bare feet. Those feet are probably washed daily (or nearly so) in a shower, bath, etc. Shoes, on the other hand, are hardly ever watched. Thus, the shoes are probaby much yuckier than the feet. I can totlly see wanting to wear shoes yourself to protect yourself from germs, sharp objects, etc. but I do not see how someone else's feet walking on the floor is yuckier than someone else's shoes walking on that floor

I think the wrong kind of "code" is being discussed..there must be a health code that covers this...

I agree. Way back when I worked at a grocery store we had to wear shoes and socks. If you were wearing sandals then you had to wear stockings. It was part of the health code the store was required to follow.

I think the situation, as you described it, is socially inappropriate, but no more unsanitary than anything else. If the store DID require shoes and the kiddo put them on just outside the door in order to comply, she would still have the same junk on her hands when she dug in the candy. You just wouldn't know about it.

It was just dangerous for her, that's all. Can't see how it would affect anybody else.

I'd like to just say that the WORST part of this is what the mgr said about the dog (I mentioned that in my post as well). That is just wrong and sad.

And, for me the part about not wearing shoes is just wrong. Not just because I love shoes. I would not allow my child to walk around without shoes in a store. Because it's tacky. I guess I am in the minority that feels that shoes are a bare minimum requirement, and that's ok.

I agree that it is tacky, I just don't buy the "germs" argument against bare feet.. Likewise, I still insist the kids not wear torn/dirty play clothes shopping, etc (those are for playing, hiking, etc.). They can't even wear those to a friend's house unless they are planning on playing outside, etc. and SHOULD have play clothes. Similarly we "dress" for the theatre (at least slax and a button down shirt) even if it is "just" a high school play, and we always dress pretty decently on the cruise ship at dinner, etc. Dressing appropriately for the situation and showing respect for yourself and others is important to me.

DH works for a grocery company and says to NEVER buy the candy/food in the bulk bins. Despite the 'regulations' for cleaning them, etc., they are rarely cleaned and are almost always refilled without taking the 'old' stuff out first. Worried about poop in the candy? Honey, there is probably that and oh so much more!

yep I was just going to say I would never buy anything out of a bulk bin anyway. Too many hands in the candy.
oh and I am an NP......I have a Podiatrist friend, she lost one of her doctors and I helped her out in her office a few times........and I can tell you without a doubt, people have the nastiest , dirtiest, most disgusting things with their feet...........oh my..........I would not want to walk where some of them walked in their bare feet...........LOL.........
Once i had this mom for a patient who happened to be one of the moms in a mommy and me gym class i was taking my ds to.............anyway, after that i couldn't stand the thought of her feet all over those gym mats.........we had to remove shoes in the gym and half the time she was without socks too

I don't see the problem with bare feet, but I do see a problem with touching your shoes and your feet with your hands and then touching products.
