Does anyone know of any discounts on Bare Escentials/Bare Minerals makeup? I love the stuff, but it's tough to justfiy, especially when it's never on sale and there are no bonus gifts... I don't really want to do ebay. Any ideas?

The most affordable way to enjoy Bare Escentuals and Bare Minerals is to limit the 'extra' things you get. Instead, buy one good kit that includes the heavenly brushes (trust me, they are MUCH better than the regular) and stick with your foundation and a blush and perhaps the veil. That's it. Bypass all the other stuff that comes and goes. Sometimes QVC has it on special, you can also get a good kit at Sephora and Nordstrom.com. Just keep yourself from buying all the extras. Use the foundation, and use the specialty brushes that come with a good basic kit.

Or change the brand of minerals you use!! Just ask!! There are several brands.

It's one of those things that I suck it up and pay full price for because the alternatives I have tried are garbage in comparison. I agree with the pp who said to avoid extras. All you need are the three main brushes, foundation/concealer, and veil. I don't use the veil all that often, even. I do have several of the colors that use on occasion, but I'm nota bigmake up wearer.

BTW, I do like the brushless mascara myself... but my sisters both hate it. It's something you'll either love or hate.

I totally agree with this. I got a three great kits at Nordstrom (one for face and one for eyes and one that was sort of extras) and between them I have everything I need. I signed up for the autoship on mineral veil and foundation at QVC but I did them timed to different pay periods so it's only about $25 every other month.

Try everyday minerals. It is much cheaper and I love it. You can try a free sample kit to make sure you like it before you order. ON my last two orders, I've received two full sized gifts and a discount. just check the blog page before you order for discounts. www.everydayminerals.com

I've tried the alternatives, as well. I was very eager to try the free Everyday Minerals samples, but I was hugely disappointed in them! Love the brushless mascara. The only one I love more (talk about expensive) is the Blinc Kiss-Me mascara. No racoon eyes again, EVER! It's waterproof and completely smudgeproof... and yet, you can take it off with just water and your fingertips! Perfect to go with BE.

If you have an Ulta B&M nearby, sign up for their mailing list and you will occasionally get coupons for 20% off any item in the store. These coupons usually say they cannot be used with "prestige cosmetics" (including BE) but I've never had a problem using them.

But honestly, BE is something that I just suck it up and pay full price because it's worth it. I've tried some of the cheaper alternatives and they just weren't as good for me.

I used Bare Escentials for over a year and really liked it. I got mine from Ebay - just was sure to use a seller that had a very good feedback. Never had a problem. I then tried Everday Minerals and love it. It is even better than Bare Escentials IMHO. You can get a free sample kit from them - all you pay is shipping (about 3 bucks). Give it a shot. In fact I found out about Everday Minerals from this board. This place has so much good info!!

Can you please tell me what the heavenly brushes are and what you use them for?

Currently I use the angled brush for the veil, the max coverage concealer brush for concealer, and I use a clinique brush for the base. I also have a flawless face brush for color, either clear radiance or warmth.

TIA.

Sephora stores usually have some kind of free shipping or discount coupon or free something another with so much purchase. The way I justify paying that much for makeup is that it lasts a good long time and if you add up the number of times and cost of your old makeup, it either equals out or the BE is even less.

Thanks for the info on the Everyday Minerals sample pack. I currently am using the L'oreal mineral foundation, but wanted to try some of the BE or EM. The sample pack is the perfect solution without a big investment!princess:

I agree. When I use mineral makeup, I use Everyday Minerals. The free samples are wonderful for trying to get the perfect color. Often there are nice discounts!

Aromaleigh sells fairly inexpensive samples as well. Unfortunately, the last time I bought samples, they had a minimum order ($10, I think), and it turns out their foundation just doesn't work for me at all. But a lot of women like it.

They are just nicer, softer brushes. I use Heavenly face for foundation (occasional veil) and the concealer brush if I need it. I don't wear any blush in the summer because my skin gets so tan, but in the winter I use a smaller Heavenly brush for that. You can get kits with Heavenly brushes at QVC, Sephora and others.

Just ordered my kit. I have been wanting to try this mineral make-up for a LONG time now. Thanks for the info!

Okay, here's my .02 as an Everyday Minerals user and a former Bare Minerals user. I was looking for an alternative to Bare Minerals because it's just so expensive, so I started doing some research. I noticed that the ingredients in the two brands were different -- mainly, BM (and Sheer Cover and Neutrogena mineral makeup) has bismuth oxychloride as one of the main ingredients. After switching to mineral makeup in the first place after reading about all the bizarre and icky things in liquid foundation, I was curious about that ingredient because it wasn't in the ingredient list for Everyday Minerals.

I saved this link to show my mom, and here is an excerpt from it about bismuth oxychloride:

"It's a very heavy element, which makes it difficult for many people to wear. It has to be forced into the pores (hence the buffing technique) otherwise it is capable of sliding off the wearer's face. The heaviness can result in clogged pores or irritated skin. Bismuth oxychloride often feels silky and not rough when rubbed between the fingers. Mineral makeup companies that do not use it have a lighter feeling makeup that usually blends into the skin better and with less effort.

Its molecular makeup is a crystalline shape, which may be a cause of the itchiness some women get when they wear it. Many women experience noticeable itching when they sweat. Don't forget it is also kin to arsenic, chemically. Your body will reject things it does not like, and if you'll get sick from ingesting arsenic, it would make sense that your skin would get irritated from having arsenic forced into it."

When I wore Bare Minerals, as much as I loved it, my face would itch so BAD every
time it was hot and I was sweating. You can read the whole article here, and it's an eye-opening read: http://ezinearticles.com/?Mineral-Makeup-and-Bismuth-Oxychloride&id=68978.

Everyday Minerals didn't have that ingredient, so I tried them, and have been using their makeup ever since. It just works better in this hot and humid climate, costs way less, and their people are really helpful. And no more itch! One time I was wanting to try a slightly different shade of makeup as my skin tone had changed with the season, and the customer service rep who emailed me back asked me a bunch of questions and then suggested a shade. It was perfect!

I don't work for EM, I swear -- I just really really love the product. Aside from the basic mineral base, my favorite product of theirs is a mineral concealer in a shade called "Sunlight." I got a sample of it, and thought "yellow concealer?" But it covers dark circles SO well and is undetectable under the base makeup. Love love love it! :)

Not to impugn the author's research... but it's imprtant to note the woman who wrote that article has her own line of mineral makeup (sans the offending ingredient) and hasn't written anything BUT that article. There is no consensus of opinion by others, either.

I think mineral makeup is a great alternative to regular makeup, no matter which one you use. I happen to prefer the texture and quality of Bare Minerals/Escentuals more than the other brands, only some of which cost less. Get the kind you like! Carry on!

That's very true! I just like to know (now!) what goes on my face. I will wear any brand of mineral makeup over liquid any day. I was dealing with skin that kept breaking out and just wouldn't behave (at almost 40!) and was almost to the point of Proactiv or a dermatologist or something. Pimples at 40 = ridiculous!! Then I tried the mineral stuff, and my skin has never looked so good. I agree -- get the kind you prefer! I just wanted to tell my little story in case someone else had tried mineral makeup and had the same itchy reaction to that ingredient as I did. :-)
