Streisand to heckler: 'Shut the @#&% up'

NEW YORK (AP) -- It was an evening that elicited tears, standing ovations, raucous laughter and shouts of joy from the audience -- and that was just in the first few minutes.

Yes, Barbra Streisand's return to touring after a 12-year absence was the extravaganza that it promised to be. Monday night's show at Madison Square Garden was the third stop of a 20-city jaunt across the nation -- a virtual lovefest between the ultimate diva and an adoring, sold-out, celebrity-dotted crowd.

Streisand effortlessly crooned through a select repertoire of the hits she's amassed during her four-decade-plus career. But the night's most riveting moment came during what was perhaps the only unscripted -- and truly uncomfortable -- episode in the three-hour show.

There was Streisand, enduring a smattering of very loud jeers as she and "George Bush" -- a celebrity impersonator -- muddled through a skit that portrayed the president as a bumbling idiot.

Though most of the crowd offered polite applause during the slightly humorous routine, it got a bit too long, especially for a few in the audience who just wanted to hear Streisand sing like she had been doing for the past hour.

"Come on, be polite!" the well-known liberal implored during the sketch as she and "Bush" exchanged zingers. But one heckler wouldn't let up. And finally, Streisand let him have it.

"Shut the (expletive) up!" Streisand bellowed, drawing wild applause. "Shut up if you can't take a joke!"

With that one F-word, the jeers ended. And the message was delivered -- no one gets away with trying to upstage Barbra Streisand, especially not in her hometown.

Once the outburst (which Streisand later apologized for) was over, Streisand noted that "the artist's role is to disturb," and delivered a message of tolerance before launching into a serenely beautiful rendition of "Somewhere." That put the focus back on what the audience came for -- her voice, one of the greatest female instruments of her generation.

Streisand's voice, at once soaring and soothing, doesn't seem to have been affected much by her long layoff from performing. Earlier in the evening, she seemed to fall short of her full potential -- moments where she once belted a tune she now seemed to simply sing at a steady register. But once the evening progressed, she got stronger, such as for her performance of one of her biggest hits, "People."

Haven't you heard that anything described as 'classy' is just the opposite?

Hmmm, I don't think I would of been too happy to pay upwards of $750 to see a Bush bashing! :sad2:

I love that part. She delivered a message of tolerance while saying its the artists role to disturb, after being intolerant of someone who happened to want to get what he paid for by her.

Message clear - we should be tolerant of everyone who agrees with her and put down anyone who doesnt.

Wy can't the entertainers leave their political opinions at the door?

::yes:: This is a HUGE turn-off for me. :sad2: As if I'll adapt my views and pick up their cause, etc. because they are a celebrity.

I would have been beyond ticked off if I'd spent money to hear yet another singer/actor whatever throw out how they feel about politics.

She is due to play in Vegas in November and some of those seats went for $1000.00 a seat..wonder if she'll try the same thing there.

Here's a hint for the stars like Streisand and such....we don't give a rat's a$* what you think of politics...we paid for you to sing and nothing more!

I caught The View today and (of course) Rosie was talking about the concert but said Walters wanted to report it tomorrow.
Entertainers are there to entertain, if you want to send a message, use Western Union.

Did these people do political skits while entertaining? :confused3 If they did I'm not aware of it.

My mom is a huge fan of Barbra and I would love to get her tickets for a concert. But not if Barb is going to go on for several minutes with a political skit that is the goes so strongly against our own political beliefs and then curse out an audience member who has the audacity to want Barb to return to singing.

I thought Barbara's political views were well known. Therefore it shouldnt be a shocker that she puts those views in one of her shows.

As much as I can't stand Bush, though, I almost can't stand her "singing" even more.

My mother is a big fan of her singing from the 70's-80's but I cant stand her

LOL,,I agree with you..I don't like Barbara...I wonder though, all of the people who hate liberals spouting out about there political stances, would you feel the same way if they were going on and on about how much they love Jesus
FTR, Cursing out anyone is pretty low

Well she has every right to say what she wants, I would just hope they limit it to a few jokes here and there; instead of a lengthy skit. Stick to entertaining people.

Heck, if I was famous I'd probably poke fun at Bush from time to time....I mean it's not hard at all! She should have shown more restraint towards the heckler though.
