Does anybody know anything or have any experience wiht them....?

I get a "cheezy" factor trying to recall them from my childhood...

They are having an open audition about 1/2 mile from my house...trying to decided if my kids that want to do modeling/acting should go????

any opinions???

This was a long time ago, in the mid-80's, but my friend went there and the put her on an apples and water diet to lose weight. She got so sick, and became anorexic. I'd hope if they're still in business today they don't still practice that approach, telling a 14 year old girl she's got a pretty face, but she's chunky.

I'm not trying to frighten you, but the modeling world is a tough gig, especially if you have a young girl who isn't so thrilled with their body. I'm sure there are many reputable places out there, and it sounds like you're trying to get all the facts together before you go. Good luck.

My niece went to the Barbizon school about a half hour away from her house when she was 10. She's 14 now, and still in the business working in LA and NYC as an actress.
She enjoyed Barbizon, but the only really helpful thing for her was the runway training, which led to many awards for her catwalk skills. But that was just for her, and all of the schools and instructors are different.
When she went, all the girls in her class were offered a contract to sign for thier agency, but she was the only one not to sign it since she was already being represented.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

I also just wanted to add, that after looking at a handbook she got from the class, it seems that alot of thier cirriculum (sp?) is out of date. Like the make-up application and fashion stuff looked like it was from the early 90's. It's not really a big deal, but I just happened to notice.

Thanks....

Sort of the stuff I remember...

In my opinion, there are better ways to get started in the buisness, but that's based on the school in our area. (Don't want to start anything here!)

I'd suggest that you start your kids in community theatre. It's free, and it really does build confidence and poise-- which is what modeling/acting is mostly about anyway.

My kids have been involved in Comm. Theater for a number of years ...this isn't a spur of the moment thought....but thanks for the comment

Anytime you have to pay to "learn to be a model" it's not worth it.

I joined John Robert Powers and it was worthless. The acting and modeling jobs I got I found on my own.

IMHO it's not worth it.

Preshi....that is also what I remember for my childhood...Just was wondering if things might have changed over the years....

My daughter did the Barbazon thing about twenty years ago. She graduated, put together a portfolio, and that was it.

Today, she admits it was the worst thing she ever did and would never recommend it for anyone. But, try to tell that to a teenager...
