my 10yo son was invited to his friend older brother's bar mitzvah. The party is being held at a very nice catering hall on Long Island (NY). What is the appropriate amount for a gift ( i am thinking cash or gift card)? I dont' need to be ultra generous but don't want to be cheap either....If your child was invited...what would be in the card???? I really have no idea!!! Please help!

Okay this was 18 years ago when I went to a friend's Bat Mitzvah. I gave her a nice necklace. Some of the other girls gave $$$, savings bonds, and gift certificates.

I'd recommend around $25.

money in multiples of 18. The number represents good luck and "chai" or "life" This can be $18, $36 in cash, gift cards to gamestop, toy store, itunes.

I would say $25 minimum but certainly not higher than $50. How about a savings bond, haven't bought one in forever, but $25 buys you a $50 bond so it looks like more and might actually get saved for college or something important.

The current rate for a kids gift here is $36 for most and $50 for a really good friend.

DD11 just went to a Bar Mitzvah and we gave $54. It was a two day affair (ceremony Saturday and party Sunday) and she stayed overnight. If adults are going, I gift as if it was a wedding.

If not a close friend, I think $50 would be good (that's what dd14's friends gave - we gave a lot more, because our whole family was invited).
