Ummm, I've run across this site before. I think it's a spoof. (They run this page about this church, spoofing other things they've heard said and then really running with them.) For confirmation, check out some of the links.

You guys do realize this is a spoof, right? Remember the name Jonathan Edwards from U. S. history?

The sad thing is that there are churches condemning things in ways that are almost as ludicrous as this. I just heard our local anti-Halloween guy on the radio Friday. He has previously crusaded against Harry Potter and the Teletubbies. My all-time favorite crazy Christian was a pastor in my county who held a book burning for Bibles not the King James Version -- he said we should only use the Bible Jesus used.

Having lived among the extremely conservative Southern Baptists for years, this sounds like crap they would spew. So it's easy to see why somebody would think this was for reals.

I know what ya mean,tarheel. I well remember how burned I got by the asst pastor (now the fulltime pastor)at my mom's church when I was in like 10th grade. I had volunteered to help out with the 5/6th grade youth group. I planned a Halloween party for one Sunday after church and went down to the secretary's office to give her the postcards I'd made up (addressed 'em and everything..all but the stamp)and asked her to mail them for me. Well...the asst pastor got ahold of them and told her to shred them or something. When I asked later why they hadn't been sent out, he said he objected to the following words:
Scary
Spooky
Creepy
Wierd
They were 'unChristian'. and might scare the kids. Hello! These are 5/6th graders! They can be scared by those words alone???

All which were on the postcard, telling about the costume contest I had planned to hold as part of the party. Needless to say, I had to BEG people to come on the Sunday it was held and only 3 people showed up.

That's what threw me,too. Serena. It sounds SO much like a lot of Southern Baptists I know that I couldn't help but believe it was real.

One time, a mother of a friend of mine who was a very strict Southern Baptist, told me that if I spelled Christmas "Xmas" I was going to hell.

I had never heard of this site, but DH and I realized right away that it sounded a lot like the Onion. I thought it was crazy that the woman fainted!! I didn't think people actually fainted from being offended. Then I read the next line and knew it was a joke. It's funny though.

From what I've heard, Christ wasn't born anywhere NEAR Dec. 25. That date just happens to be close to a pagan holiday (Yule) and so it was just easier for the recently converted pagans to remember.

You are correct. In fact, many of the Christian holidays and traditions are "plagiarized" from earlier pagan religions.

As for the Spongebob controversy, while my former church's members did not have such violent reactions, I remember clearly many of them being very concerned about children watching such shows as I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched and a couple of Saturday morning shows that dealt with Egyptian or Greek gods. These people felt they were too closely tied to satanic influences and idolatry. Luckily, my parents were not of this mindset.

OMG! I was researching a toy (aquapet) that DH's young cousin wanted for Christmas and in my search I came across an article posted by Landover Baptist Church. DH even wentto their forums and posted his thoughts on their "beliefs". I never got around to seeking more info on them, but DH and my brother were having afielf day digging through thier site. After all they were finding I suspected spoof. Thank you for confirming.

I am an extremely conservative Southern Baptist. For what it's worth, I have no problems with Spongebob, Disney, or most of the other stuff that people love to bring up when discussing Southern Baptists. I just want you to know that you can be conservative without hatred. We're not all like that.
