Banned items for air travel

Ok, this is funny, but not funny at the same time. I was looking at the NTSB's site for what you can carry on for liquids and gels trying to figure out if I can pack and not have to check my bag and was reading down the list of banned items. The list has things like meat cleavers and dynamite-because you never know when you might have to chop up a roast. The dynamite I don't get but the meat cleaver, yes. There are many professional chefs that travel around. Most will have their own sets of knives, very very expensive sets of knives. I would assume if allowed most would prefer to carry them with them versus putting them in checked luggage.

In fact when I went to FL last month with my son he brought his knives along.

You can't be Gell'in in the US, even if you have to hike from one end of the airport to the other. Gell shoe inserts are not permitted in carry on or checked luggage. Poor Dr. Sholl.

Ohh. You are right. I went back and I'd read that wrong. So you get be comfy when you arrive, but not walking thru the airport.

We go for the Marathon - and dont check a bag - we did take the carryon gel stuff (electrolytes) we put them in the quart bag - and didnt have problems! I also took a bag of 100 glow sticks (the old short ones that you need to take a cord and string it to wear - I fully expected these to be tossed - they were given to me by a company and I had no money invested in them - and I was shocked they didnt question them! But they were in their original sealed bag - not sure if that made a difference or not - it was OHare airport

now I didnt realize but I had a "gift" wine corkscrew in my bag! and that got confiscated - and I was embarrassed - however that is listed on the TSA website as ok!! (I had no problem giving it to them and letting them throw it away - it was embarassing that I didnt know it was in my suitcase, I thought I had taken it out - and digging thru my undies was mortifying!!)

It is SUCH a hassle to have to put my spear gun and my sabers (not to mention my brass knuckles!) in my checked baggage every time I travel. Ugh.









Interesting list, though. Thanks for posting! I had no idea about the gel shoe inserts.

I find it interesting that you can bring tools smaller than 7", but not over 7". Does that mean you can't do any harm with a 6 7/8" tool, but you could with a 7 1/8" tool?????

I can honestly say gel sole inserts in the shoes you wear daily are one I would never even have thought of. Its something you just forget about.

DH has his little computer repair screwdrivers taken once. He keeps them in his computer backpack & just forgot they were there. They are probably 4" long.

I can honestly say gel sole inserts in the shoes you wear daily are one I would never even have thought of. Its something you just forget about.

We were in Florida when the new rules about liquids passed. I think it was two days later that we had to fly home. Since all we had to go on was what we heard on television, we had a hard time packing our carry-ons. However, in retrospect, the TSA agents were having a hard time too, because my mom had gel inserts in her shoes and no one said anything to her. It wasn't deliberate; we just didn't think about it.

hmphf-i sent my temp orthotics which were based on gel thru xray at at least three major airports-no one said a word. I can however tell you that removable hard drives will totally freak TSA agents out-i nearly went to jail for one i was hand carrying cause i did want to check it-er not because of the hard drive-but because teh agent thought-'If you got an HP 8400 sitting aroumd we can put it in there and ill show you teh contents-otherwise youll have to take my word for it' was obstructive.

I am glad I saw this one because I do have gel inserts in some of my shoes.
