Can you bank points that someone else has transferred to you from their DVC account? I'll be transferring some to a friend who then needs to bank them.

My understanding is that transfered points can not be banked. They retain the use year of the person who transfered them.

Points can only be moved once, so once they were transferred, that was one move. An yes, they still retain the same use year, so if your points have a June use year, and the transferred points have a March use year, then use those transferred points before March, or you will lose them. Usually, it's a better idea to keep the points in the original account till you make a reservation.

Beg to differ, as of August 2000, points once transfered can be banked by the recipient. You cannot transfer banked points but regular points once transfered can be banked.

I hate to diagree with the previous two posters to your question regarding transferred points but in this case I must. While a few years back you could neither bank nor borrow transferred points, the latest DVC guidelines cleartly state that transferred points MAY be banked. This is actually the second time that I can remember where a previous DVC guideline was changed to the benefit of the members. The first change occured when DVC moved the use of points in holding to 60 days from the original 30. Unfortunately I do not have the specific DVC guideline revision to accurately cite because I keep those documents at the office but it is clearly stated in the 2001 revision under the section dealing with transferred points. If you are interested, I can repost on Monday citing the proper revision and section dealing with this issue.

I agree - called MS a couple of months ago and got the same story - transferred points can be banked.

Also (and this was kinda confusing to me), the points do retain their original use-year as to when they will expire, but, when the points are transferred, you must inform MS which of your use-years you want them deposited into. For example, I booked a reservation using my OKW points for a co-worker of mine to give her the 11-month priority period for December a couple of months ago. She has an August use-year. MS tells me that, when we call them on August 1st to request the transfer into my account, I must specify if I want them to deposit them into my October 2001 or October 2002 use-year.

I posted a thread quite some time ago (attempting) to explain the logic for this - I'm afraid I can't recall it now, though.

okay - from that scenario, my friend (September use year) would use all her points to book a reservation at BCV, and I (anticipated August use year) would transfer half that amount to her, and she can choose whether she wants them for the September 2002 or September 2003 use years. Is this right?

We are doing it this way because she will have points on March 6 when BCV starts booking, and I will not, because I am not actually buying until April. I don't yet have member documents to check. If I make a point transfer to her, can it be done at any time, or would it have to be done at the same time we make the reservation? Or must the transfer be done in August, when my use year starts, or September, when hers starts?

Actually there's a third. When we first purchased in 1993 you could only borrow 50% of your next year's points. I don't remember when they changed it to 100% but it was fairly soon after that.
