banking question

Certain financial transactions require a Medallion signature guarantee. When we changed my DS's custodial account into one in his name only, we had to go to the bank to get that signature guarantee. Not sure where else we could have gone. Other than that, most of our banking is done online.

Oops, forgot to insert the quote from MillauFr

My mom had a will naming me as executor, I still needed that paper from the court to do anything. I needed it to cash in her stocks and bonds and sell the house. The estate had a value of around $100,000, we had to pay the state taxes on it, which killed me ($4500). We should have had everything signed over years before, she was ill for a long time.

My mom had everything set up so I didn't have to pay a penny of tax. No Probate. No state tax, and too small of an estate for Federal tax. Well, she did set up her IRA so I could continue making withdrawals, so I do pay income tax on that withdrawal every year.

I've always signed my name, printed my child's name - minor. Probably a hundred times.

Op here. Took it into my local credit union as I remembered she had a savings account there. Was able to deposit without trouble. Thanks everyone

In a related topic. Does anyone still see a need to have an account at a brick and mortar bank? I have an account at US Bank but I haven't been to a branch in two years. I was thinking about closing it. It just that Fidelity gives me such a better deal. They pay interest on my deposits (yes its small but its something), they reimburse all of my ATM fees, free downloads into Quicken, they rebate 2% all of my credit card charges, no BS charges that many of the big banks hit you up for. Plus when I drive downtown Seattle and visit my financial advisor there they even reimburse me for parking fees for 3 hours which is worth about $10-$15.
My bank wants you to come in and see them! They have a gourmet coffee bar and popcorn! They also redesigned their lobbies and they are very modern spaces meant to gather. They even have beer tastings and other events through the year like mountain bike rides. Love my bank!!!

My bank cashed several checks made out to MyFirstName HusbandsLastName even thought a> that's not my name b> he's not on my account at all c> they have no idea I'm married.
I honestly think for small checks, no one even looks at them, and they figure they'll deal with it if someone objects to it.

I want to join your bank! I use CapitalOne360 (formerly ING) online banking and I believe they require you to have an account at a brick & mortar bank to link your online account to. Or at least they did when I first opened the online account ~10 years ago. I use TD Bank because they have a basic checking account with no fees as long as you keep a $100 minimum balance. I also use their coin counting machines that are free for account holders, and sometimes need to deposit cash which you can't do into an online account.

Just went through the drive-thru today to drop off a payment and they had a notice up for a cookie decorating party with cookies from the local boutique bakery! Also just got a post-card to pick-up a gift; probably something small that I don't need but at least it's something right? I would say they have little to gain from me, I'm a low-dollar banker. Small mortgage and I only have a low-balance checking account because it was free with my mortgage; otherwise $5/mo. Although, I have brought them 4 mortgages from friends and both my boyfriend and I have done our initial home loans and refi's with them. They will probably make some good money over the years from my referrals.

My Wells Fargo branch has coffee and cookies for customers. And they have an employee to greet you just inside the door. I'm not in there very often, but they do seem to want to do business with me.
