banking question

My head hurts. Really badly. I had requested info from DVC, got a call from a guide today, and talked to him for an hour. I've been running numbers and looking at spreadsheets all day.

George, the guide, said they are doing June UY's right now. Is that bad for primarily June visits? If I call at my 11 months, they'll pull from the next year's point pool, right? He also said that I would receive this year's points. We won't be going before next June, so does that mean with a June UY I have until Feb. 1 to bank them?

Now, that would mean that on June 1, 2010 I would get 160 more points. So as of June 1, 2010 I would have 320 points. How long can those original 160 points stay in the bank? Could we use them for the next 8 years at 20 points each to upgrade to a MK view? I thought I just read somewhere that they are only good for one year. Is that one year from banking, or 1 year from the day they are given to you? Meaning if I got a June UY, would they expire the following June (2010), a year from the following June, (2011)... or even Feb. 2011 if I banked them Feb. 2010??? I know what I am trying to ask, I hope you can make sense of it.

I have a June use year, we usually make 2 trips a year, one in June and one in the Dec-January time frame.

I think I can help with your banking questions.

If you have a 160 point contract. You can bank June 2009 points into the June 2010 use year, giving you 320 points in your 2010 use year. Those 2009 UY points (160) HAVE to be used by May 31, 2011, but the 160 points you received in 2010 can be banked into the June 2011 use year.

You can not bank more than the total of one use year of points. You can also borrow one use years worth of points.

Meaning, with a 160 point contract, if you only went to Disney every 3 years, you could have 480 points available every 3 years.

With a June use year, you want to try to avoid making reservatoins for stays in March, April and May, unless you are nearly 100% sure you won't have to cancel them on short notice As long as you cancelled them by January 27 (31 days prior to March 1) you'd be fine to bank the points used, unless they were already banked or borrowed points. You'd also need to cancel any February reservations at least 31 days before arrival to avoid those points going into a holding status, which are also not bankable.

But if you normally travel in June, a June use year is fine. :)

You can get any UY you want. I wouldn't buy a June UY if you visit in June, I would buy April.

As said June UY is OK if you do not plan on doing spring vacations. Also as said you can get any UY you want (you just have to make it a requirement of purchasing). If you have banked your 2009 points they should use them first but always confirm this to be sure.

If you are going next year and have a specific reservation decided upon you might want to make sure that booking that is part of the agreement also (especially if it is a hard to get home resort reservation since you are past the 11 month mark)

June UY will work for your June visits. However, if you ever anticipate wanting to go in April/May, then you might want to go with April. Even with an April UY, trips through the summer and fall (including Dec) would be covered if you hand to cancel and wanted to still bank points.

Once you bank 2009 points, you have to use them during your 2010 UY. But, you can always bank left over current year points so in essence, you can stretch out your points to give you the upgrade option yearly (until you run out of those points).

I will be doing that exact same thing. I have a June UY (travel in August--teacher) and just added on 50 more BLT points. I won't need them this year and will be banking them into next year. That will give me 230 to start June 2010 (180 + 50 banked).

When I make my reservation in September, I will need 191 so they will use the 50 banked points first, and then take the other 141 from current year. That will leave me 39 2010 points left, which I will bank so that I start 2011 with 219 points.

Good luck!

a june UY is great for primarily june visits...as already stated, the only potential downside is if you'll travel some in march through may...

the Understanding Use Year thread may make your head hurt even more but it's very helpful.

if you call now to book next june, they might use 2010 (current) pts unless you specifically tell them to bank the 2009 pts and use them.

How long can those original 160 points stay in the bank? Could we use them for the next 8 years at 20 points each to upgrade to a MK view? I thought I just read somewhere that they are only good for one year.

again the linked use year thread would be helpful.

you can only bank one year ahead and then the pts expire...but what would actually happen, as chuck suggests, is that you'd bank 160 pts from 2009 into 2010 - USE the banked 2009 pts 1st and also use 20 pts from 2010 and bank the remaining 140 pts from 2010 into 2011 - then in 2011, repeat the process and use 140 banked pts from 2010 plus 40 pts from 2011...and so on... so that you are using 20 pts additionally per year to book an MK view...
