Lets say, you bank 15 points into 2009. In 2009, when you take your first vacation, are those points used on that vacation? Or do you have to use all of your points for 2009 to use your 15 banked points? I hope that makes sense.

I am fairly new to this but my understanding is they would use bank points first unless you indicate otherwise.

Yes, they should use banked points first. In fact, some members have asked to use current use year points rather than banked points first and were told they could not do it. But it is always a good idea to verify which points are being used when you make a reservation. MS does sometimes make errors.

Since I usually have banked points, I ALWAYS ask MS to use those first. Every single time I get the same response - "We always use banked points first." However, I'll continue to ask, as I don't want to leave any room for misinterpretation and be in a position to have to take a trip or rent points just because I don't want to lose them.

I was able to use current '08 points for my upcomming reservation instead of using my banked '07 points. This was not the default... instead I needed to call and have the points re-allocated so that those particular banked points remained unused.

There is also the strategy of setting up a phantom reservation using the banked points, then making the reservation you want with current points, then canceling the phantom reservation.

In my case... I am selling a contract that contains both current and banked points. My closing date would need to be delayed until after check-out if any of the points (current or banked) were assigned to a pending reservation.

If you are making 2 reservations, one that you are sure you will use and another that is more tentative, you would want to use the banked points for the "sure" one.
