Banking Every Year

My probably dumb question of the day - Is it possible to keep banking points ahead until you have enough for a larger room or a higher point week? We are having a hard time deciding how many points we need especially with all the point changes the past couple of years. (We are looking at resales) So lets say I have 15 points from 2009 left. I bank those to 2010. I use 2009 & 2010 points for a room but have 30 points now left at the end of 2010 which I then bank to 2011. I use 2010 & 2011 points in 2011 and then have 45 2011 points left I bank to 2012 etc etc.

Also when would I have to bank by? (I know I read this elsewhere but the mind is blank at the moment)

you can only bank one year's worth of pts at a time.

you can bank 2009 pts into 2010 but the 2009 pts will expire at the end of your 2010 use year. those 2009 pts cannot be banked again.

but if you have 160 pts total...you can bank all 160 pts from 2009 into 2010 and also borrow 160 pts from 2011 into 2010...totalling a maximum of 160 times 3 = 480 pts for use in your 2010 use year.

so yes, in the scenario you proposed, you could wind up using only banked pts in some year in the future such that you can bank all of that current year's points for a stay in the next use year. (but if any of those banked pts were not needed in the next year and were not used, they would expire.)

you can bank up to 8 months after the start of your use year.

You can only bank points forward 1 year. Meaning you can bank your 2009 into 2010, but could not then bank the 2009 from 2010 into 2011.

You can bank and borrow however. So you would bank 2009 into 2010 and in 2010 you could also borrow 2011, so in essence have 3 years of pts.

of course then you wouldn't have pts again until 2012 (unless you borrow again in 2011).

I know I cannot bank 2009 into 2011.
Maybe I did not explain correctly.
Lets say in 2009 I have 15 unused points I bank into 2010.
2010 I use those 15 - 2009 points and most of my 2010 points. Leaving me with 30 - 2010 points I bank into 2011.
2011 I used the 30 - 2010 points and some of 2011 points. Leaving me with 45 - 2011 points I bank into 2012. Etc
Follow?

sorry - i probably updated my answer to clarify while you were typing...your plan would work till you maxed out on the number of pts you own per year, then you'd need to stay an extra day or something...

here's a graphical banking chart to make it up to you. ;)

as chart states you would be able to bank up to 100% of current UY pts every year. You plan would work fine

Yes, if you are using less points than you own, eventually you could end up with a lot of extra points..

We had extra last year due to add ons. We own 180, but only needed 115 in 2009 so I banked 65. That gave me 245 to start my 2010 UY. Since I only used 184 (65 2009 points, and 119 2010), I still have 61 available. In September, I will bank them so I can book my 2011 trip.

Since my average trip from now on, will be between 185 - 200 each year, those "extra" will last me for several years.

By simply saving a few extra points in just one year, it is like owning a bigger contract for several.

I plan on doing it exactly as you've described.
With my add on. I figure I will have "extra" points for a few years.
I received the previous point allotment. I will use those banked points first and carry over some of the current years for a few years.

When I said carry over for a few years... I mean using banked first. I do also understand the rules for banking into one year only...;)

I did that during my first years of DVC. I bought in September 1999 with an April use year. The incentive at that time was to sell back up to 150 points for $10/point. I sold back 150 of my 250 and banked 100. My first trip was not until May 2000, so I had my regular 250 points too. I banked some points every year for the first 5 years until I lost the "cushion".

Other than a stay that straddles the start of your UY, the MOST points you could get together would be 3 years worth of points with banking and borrowing.

I think that if you can bank 20-30 points every year that means that you bought the right amount of points for your family. As long as MS uses the banked points from the previous use year first, you should be good to go. Also, it's also nice to have enough extra points to cover yourself in case of another reallocation of the point charts. :thumbsup2

Your plan worked fine for us for the first few years.

Then we used the extra points we'd been pushing forward to stay in a one bedroom instead of a studio. Beware of that. Once you've experienced the next level, it's tough to go back.

We did an add-on to allow us to do the one bedroom every trip.

Then we invited some friends to join us and tried a 2 bedroom for the first time. Darn it, that was really fun, too. We've invited friends and family a few times, and now we're borrowing more and more points each year. Time to start looking at another add-on. (I'm nervous about the webinar, tomorrow. Darn them! How'd DVD know that's the same week the IRS forecast I'd receive my refund check?)

It's a disease. They've even given it a name: Addonitis.

Beware. There's no cure. ;)

I get it because that's exactly what we've been doing. Works fine. :thumbsup2

Looks like you got it.
To me the easiset description is each individual point of each use year can be banked, borrowed or used. What you do to point 1 of 2009 has no bearing on point 2 of 2009 or point 1 of 2010....

Actually, within the appropriate window you could decide to bank 10 2010 points now, then call back later and bank 5 more. Then, if you decide you want to use 15 more points in 2010, While you cannot "un-bank" those 15 2009 points, you can borrow 15 from 2011...
