Banking and changing reservations

So, I just made our first reservation home! In order to do this I had to borrow 40 points from my 2010 UY (mine is June) - our vacation actually spans our current UY and next UY. Ideally, I would like to split our 9 day stay into 2 resorts come the 7 month mark. I am concerned though from the literature I have been reading today that when modifying reservations (if changing for lower points) that points, including borrowed ones will be returned to the UY in which my ressies fall.
So, where do they go since it falls in to both use years and if it goes back to my 09 use year then will I lose them since it ends May 31st and we are already going to be on vacation then?

I hope I am not confusing you more than I am confused! :rolleyes1:confused:
thanks

Check with MS. They may have booked your ressie so that you are not technically "borrowing" next year's points. Perhaps they booked whatever time your vacation carries over into your next UY with that year's points.

I know, it can be REAL confusing at times. I would call them back and ask them how they allocated points to this ressie.

As a policy, you cannot bank points that you have borrowed from the next UY. You have to use them or lose them.

It is a little hard to tell without specifics. IF your vacation spans both June UY 09 and June UY 10, that I am assuming that you are going during the last week in May and the beginning of June.

But, if you had to use 40 points from June 2010 UY to cover some of the nights during that last week of May, those points would become 2009 UY points and could not be returned.

At this point, since the reservation has been made, you, in essence, have your 2009 points plus the borrowed 40 that must be used by May 31st, 2010.

If you change resorts at the 7 month window, and need less points then what you are using now, just be sure that the borrowed points get used first and then finish up with the 2009 points. As long as you are in your banking window (up until January 31st, 2010), you can bank any of the 2009 points that you didn't need.

But are you sure you actually borrowed the points? You're not thinking they are borrowed because you made the reservation today, during your 09 UY, are you? Borrowing goes in to effect based on the travel dates, not the day you make the reservation.

she did tell me that we would be borrowing 40 points from 2010 - I didn't think about the points difference of when I modified at 7 months
hmmm
I will call them
thanks

You may want to look at your account online at the member website to see how they accounted for it. I thought each night is treated separate when it spans use years or seasons. So your May dates would be in your 09 use year, then the June nights would be in your 10 use year.

Ah HA - that is the key - when I modify my ressies I will be sure to use the borrowed points first and can then bank my 09 - that is the piece I was missing!
yes, I am sure I borrowed

thanks Sandi

I'm surprised that MS wouldn't automatically do that. I hope all works out.

As long as you haven't passed your banking deadline.

You are right, they should do that but it never hurts to make sure the CM understands that is what you want to happen.
