Banking and Borrowing Points

I am looking into DVC, and I just want to be sure. For example if I were planning a trip in 2013, could I bank my 2012 points and borrow my 2014 points so that I would have 3 times my annual points allowance to use in 2013? Are there any costs or penalties for doing this?

Sorry if this is a dumb question!
Thanks,
K

Depending on use year month, you are absolutely correct.

We have an August use year (get our points every 8/1). If we wanted to take a big trip in October of 2013 we could bank our 2012 points into 2013 and borrow our 2014 points into 2013 for 3x our point total.

Obviously having no points to use in 2012 or 2014 (if we bank and borrow all).

As the PP said. :goodvibes That's how we were able to do 8 nights in a 2 bedroom (1 at BLT MK view and the rest at AKV). We bought in last year before Dec. (our use-year). Banked our 2008 points, used our 2009 points and borrowed a little from 2010 (which we'll get in a week-ish). :goodvibes It can be hard to figure sometimes though for us NON-math inclined and for the Dec. UY, it's difficult to remember that most of 2010 you're still in your 2009 points. :rolleyes1

It's better not to think of it as 2012, 2013 and 2014. You have to look at your UY (starting month) and use that as the time frame. Like June UY so June 2012 to May 2013.

Because if you have a Dec UY (that one always messes people up), a trip in 2012 for any month but Dec will fall in your 2011 UY.

OOO. That helped me too Thanks!

No costs or penalties associated with banking borrowing. If you don't use or bank points, you forfeit them, so maybe it's always better to be using all your points and err on the side of borrowing rather than be stuck with points and not being able to take a trip before they expire.

OP, we're planning a big WDW trip (our first!), leaving in just 8 days! We booked most of our (march UY) 2009 points to 2010, then took quite a few of our 2011 points and borrowed them into 2010. And of course the 2010 points are sitting there. So we had alllll those points available for a trip from March 2010 through end of Feb 2011. We're using them in December (our DVC portion doesn't start until Dec). No penalties, no costs, etc etc.

If for some reason we have to cancel (which would be so so bad!) and our family that's invited couldn't use our points, we would only have until the end of Feb to use them. So that's cutting it a bit close. But it's the timing that worked for the trip, and it was the UY we were told we could get, so we're making it work. :)

Thank you all for your replies! We are looking at buying a smaller point allotment through a resale. We think we will be content to go every 2-3 years, so as long as I can bank and borrow it will work for us.

Thanks,
K

Thanks, I hadn't thought about this. The points we are looking at have an October UY.

:) That's what we originally did, and thought going every couple of years would work....:rotfl2:... we have now added on 3 times, and are planning our first ABD trip using 3 years of points. We also took our first trip without kids this year (food and wine) and loved it. One nice thing about small contracts, when you give them to your kids you can divide them up easier.

Good luck, Denise

Given a UY that is in the fall, you will find that all but 3 months fall in the calendar year that is one year later than the UY.

So, when planning a trip, the easiest to first figure out what UY you will be traveling in and then you know you can "pay" for it using banked points from the previous UY, current UY points, and borrowed points from the next UY.

For example, you have an Oct UY and want to travel in May 2012. This trip falls in your 2011 UY (Oct. 1st, 2011 through September 30th, 2012) so it can be "paid" for with banked 2010 points, current 2011 UY points, and borrowed 2012 UY points.

Good luck!
