which is better to be a banker of points or a borrower of point i say its better to borrow points but DW(heated disscusion)thinks it better to be a banker what do you think we have 200 points

We have usually been a borrower of a few points here or there (We have several different contracts and three different home resorts) but this is the 2nd year we have been able to bank a large number of points. I like to try to stay as close to even as possible, unless we are specifically banking for a trip, like a cruise or something of that nature. It makes sense to me not to be perpetually banking without a future purpose, as you may end up with unplanned circumstances where you can not use the points or bank them further. I hope that makes sense. That being said, you are not talking about a very large number of points so even if you banked all of them one year, you should be able to make use of them the following year without too much difficulty. I can't wait to see what others do regarding bankng and borrowing as you get more responses.

I'd rather stay in borrowed status. We never have to worry about deadlines for using them, banking them - or ohno - we better make a last minute trip or our points won't get used! We're military and have a hard time making long term plans - so banking really isn't too much of an option!

We bank we prefer not to borrow we are also renters and bankers LOL if we have a large number of points for some reason we rent half bank half usually. We hate to borrow as then you are usually in a state of constant borrowing.

We started out as borrowers right away - the day after we received notification that we had closed and were official members, DH called and made ressies for two trips that used up two years worth of points!

We're now more or less even - but we have no problem borrowing if need be. We'll bank if we have extra points, but the number of points we expect to have for banking is a small fraction of the number we're likely to borrow!

This is CarolynFH by the way, posting as DD....

I prefer to be banked.

Then again, my only debt is my mortgage. I think I just don't like to borrow anything.

I am new at this and am finding that I am being really stingy with my points. I just figure is better to bank than to borrow (now I sound like my mother!) I have thru 2007 trips planned but with xtra points to bank in case I just want to take off and go to WDW. I am very interested in this thread on what the experts think. :)

I have been a borrower since joining, this is the first time I've banked points - a total of 4! Who knows what the future holds?

I pretty much use all of my points and only bank when I have less points than a 1 night stay would use.

We bought in with a Magical Beginnings credit -- and then planned a trip for a few months later, so had to borrow right away. We've since done just about every trip on borrowed points, but now we're only 4 points "in debt." I think we're going to splurge in 2006 and use all our points, so we'll still be 4 points in debt next year as well.

I wouldn't hesitate to borrow if I needed to, but in general, I like the idea of banking better. I like the idea of always having more than enough points ahead of me rather than being "in debt."

I am unsure why it matters. You bought the points to use. We have been borrowed and banked on our contracts and sometimes both on the same contract at the same time.

Some might posit that regular borrowing may signal a need for additional points. :cool1:

There's a difference of opinion in our family. DH wants to have points banked, I want to borrow. I figure it's one of our rare opportunities to get an "interest free loan"-you get to use points now and pay the dues on them later .

I'm a borrower. I figure I am probably not going to be able to go in 2042, so I borrowed that year's points already!!!!

I was a banker from 1999 to 2004 (banked 100 remaining points after magical beginnings in 1999). This year it caught up with me and I became a borrower (but only 3 points!). I don't know why I don't like to borrow, I guess because it makes points less flexible in case of a cancellation.

We actually do both. We overbank, and then borrow later in the use year as a strategy to avoid losing points. We just have to watch to be sure we don't bank more than we can reasonably expect to use the following year, and we also have to be careful not to borrow for tentative reservations because we can't un-borrow points.

We all need to keep in mind that without bankers there could be no borrowing and without borrowers, there can be no banking.

If banking and borrowing are not approximately "in balance", DVC may need to suspend both.

IMHO, one isn't better than another. It just depends on your personal situation. We've done both.

Best wishes-

We do both as needed. Some years we bank more than 100 points, but other years we end up borrowing up to 100. We only have 380 points, so we do a lot of planning to get the most out of them.

We are definitely borrowers. That's fine with us as I don't think I'll be around at the end of my contract!!!!!!!!

Several times we have banked, then borrowed.

For the last few years we have been borrowing. I am trying not to borrow any more of my 2006 use year as we have 275 remaining and I keep thinking, "look at what we can do with 275+ our 2007 points!
