Banked Points Question

I don't know if I'm overthinking this but here goes. I have banked 2017 points (Sept UY) and currently have a reservation for CCV for 2/17-2/24 using these points but we want to try and go somewhere else at 7 months. We have enough 2018 points to do this without canceling but I'm confused what will happen to the points. When we cancel the original CCV will those 2017 points go towards the new reservation or are they lost or will the 2017 points go towards the new reservation and the 2018 points go back?

The banked points will not automatically be put into the new reservation. If you cancel the first reservation before making the new one, the banked points will be used first in the new one. However, if, as you plan, you first make a new reservation using 2018 points and then cancel the reservation with the banked points, the points in the first reservation will go back into your account as unused banked points. To use them for the new reservation, you will need to call MS and have them reallocate the points in the new reservation by replacing the 2018 points with banked points, which you can do as long as the points used in the new reservation are from the same use year as the banked points.
