Banked points question

We have a trip scheduled in May with a 2 bdrm and studio booked. We are bringing 2 other families with us. One family is possibly considering canceling or shortening their trip. I have a June use year so I have tried to stress to this family that I must know their plans by the end of this month so that I can bank those points. No matter how much I stress this to them they don't seem to quite get the importance of this but that's another issue. Frustrating! Anyway, we have a trip scheduled for early Dec of this year. If they do cancel can I take these banked points and apply them towards the December reservation even though it has already been made or would we have to rebook? We have a THV booked and I certainly wouldn't want to risk losing it. Thanks for any advice.

bringing others along can work out that way. sorry.

to clarify - if the pts for the may reservation are current pts and you cancel before the banking window closes, then yes, you can bank them into your 2011 use year.

if they are SSR pts and the reservation for THV was made within the home resort window, MS should be able to reallocate the points to use banked pts. might depend on how experienced the MS person is...

if they are not SSR pts and the reservation for THV was made within the home resort window, there would need to be availability for THV at the beginning or end of the reservation to cancel and rebook to prevent using non-home points in the home resort window.

Thanks Charles for the quick response. Yes, these are 2010 points that are probably going to be banked, 104 of them. The THV reservation for December is currently using 22 2010 banked points and the rest of the reservation is 2011 points.

I totally understand the frustrated part! We had a trip planned with our nieces and stressed to them the importance of letting us know if they were 100 % committed on going. We hadn't heard from them in a month, so we asked them one last time and they still couldn't make up their minds. I explained to them that we do not have the luxury of deciding at our leisure when using the DVC points.
In the end we decided to cancel and bank the points, and offered them to come another time.

You have 11 days to bank those point if you have a June UY.

If the family can't confirm they are going or not, staying the full length of the trip or not, cancel their reservation by Jan 31 and tell them you are sorry, but you just couldn't lose the points on a whim.

Thanks Havana and Deb. I am actually giving them until Monday to decide for certain. This trip has been planned for one year. Either you are coming or not. I have learned my lesson. I have no plans to bring others for future visits except the in laws. I just don't think most people really "get it.". They don't realize that I pay for this and it's not like a regular hotel reservation.

Thats it. people don't get it who aren't involved with the process or understand what's (points) at stake,
