We purchased our points on our cruise last May (2008). We were given 2007 points which we used in December.

We have a June UY, so we banked our 2008 points in January of this year (2009).

So now, are there any restrictions on those banked points? I know we can't use them for a trip this year. By this year, does that mean before June 30, 2009? And we can't transfer them to another member at all, right? Can we rent them to a non-member? (I would guess so, because we'd just be making the reservation ourselves, but in someone else's name)

And we can't use them to trade out at all, right?

I wish I could keep this all straight in my head. Is there any sort of tutorial I can find that would help me sort it all out? I feel so stupid!

Technically, you are never given points on a specific date. The points are always there for every use year. (I can look at DVCmember.com and "see" my 2011 points, I think cruises and some exchanges let you book 2 years out)

The 2008 points you banked in January 2009 cannot be used for a stay before June 1, 2009 (You could book a June+ stay now, but you cannot use them for an April or May trip this year.
You could also arrange a rental for travel after June 1 (and before June 1, 2010)
You are correct, the points you banked cannot be transferred.

I am not 100% certain about trade out, but I think you could still book a tradeout before feb 2010, the "rule of 4" as banked 2008 points are effectively 2009 points.

FYI, If you wanted to use points before June 1, 2009, you can make a reservation (subject to availability of course) with borrowed 2009 points.

The only restrictions on banked points is that they are considered expired on the eve of the UY, cannot be banked again and cannot be transferred. They can be used for DVC travel or cash equivalent options that fall in your 2009 UY. You can potentially use them to trade to RCI as well or you could deposit to RCI for a future trade consideration where that travel would have to be completed by 2 years past the start date of the week DVC gives to RCI, say 2.5 years roughly from when you tell them to do the deposit. If you did decide to deposit first, ask more info so you can understand the nuances involved including how many points you should deposit.

Just out of curiosity (I think we all know the answer) but if I were to bank this UY's points I understand that I cant use them until next UY. But if I then change my mind could I borrow next years points and use them this year?

Yes you can.

That surprises me!
I'm not sure what surprises you. You can bank points within the rules and borrow points almost at will. No reason that having banked other points precludes you from borrowing the points you could have borrowed anyway. What you can't do is borrow the banked points. These are all rules c/w other systems that allow banking and borrowing.
