Bank this years points for December trip (with August use year)

I hope this make sense. I have 182 points that need to be banked by the end of March (my use year is August). I am planning to make reservations this month for December 2018. Is it better to bank the points first and then make the reservation. If I bank and then have to cancel the reservation where do these points go? DH cannot take vacation until after August so we definitely will not use the points in this use year. If I don’t bank and make the reservation this month will it just use points from the next use year not touching the 182?

You have to bank the points if you want to use them for a December 2018 reservation. You cannot use them for that December 2018 reservation unless you bank them first.
