Bank / Borrow pts question

If I borrow pts from 2004 for a 2003 reservation (say 2 rooms, one 2 br and one studio), and then cancel the studio... the borrowed pts get returned to the 2003 account (not 2004). My question -- if it is still within the window for banking, can I then bank some of the 2003 pts into 2004?

Which pts get "consumed" first by my 2br ressie, and which are left behind? Do you have to use all the 2003 before you start to use the borrowed 2004 pts?

I suppose if I'm stuck with them, I could always try to use them for extra days on the 2br, or rent them... Can borrowed unused pts be transferred to anyone?

(COnfusing, I know -- help appreciated!)

MS can reallocate the points used for the reservations so that the borrowed points will be used for the reservation you are keeping and then the freed-up current points can be banked.

Make sure you are still within your banking windows to be able to do so.

Sometimes they will do this and others they will cancel and rebook to do it. It doesn't matter unless the resort if on a wait list, then you could lose your reservation.

So let's say I borrow 50 pts to make my 2 reservations -- a 2br and a studio. In January, I find out that the other party is bailing out. I go to cancel the studio -- leaving me with (as an arbitrary #) 50 pts. Are you saying that MS can tell me how many of those 50 pts are "2003" and how many are "2004"? WOuld they have split the borrowed pts between the 2 ressies?

I figured it would either be a matter of (a) yes, you can send "2003" pts into 2004 (i.e. I ask that 50 of my 2003 pts get sent to 2004, so long as I'm within my banking window for that amount), or (b) no, you have to use up your 2003 pts before you touch you borrowed 2004 pts, and borrowed 2004 pts can't go home again to 2004, so rent 'em or use 'em or lose 'em. It sounded to me by Doc's post that (a) was applicable. Why would I have to re-do my 2 br ressie? DO I need to specify as I make the initial ressie "Hey, use only 2003 pts for that studio, in case they bail -- use borrowed pts for the 2 br" ?

Yes they can tell you about each point, whether it's current, banked or borrowed. While they usually use if banked or borrowed points first, they will only do this if they are already there. They will not automatically substitute if you make the reservations then end up with banked or borrowed points.

Lets say you have 150 points and make a reservation to that use year using 150 points. You think bank your 150 points from the previous year. You will have 150 banked points. You can ask DVC to substitute them for your pending 150 pt reservation freeing up those current points which they may or may not be willing to do. If there's no wait list, they absolutely will do it. If there is a wait list they may or may not without losing your current reservation. And they will not automatically do so. Does that answer what you're asking?

It is my belief that DVC has planned for a certain amount of points being lost along the way. While MS may not want you to lose points and frequently make suggestions to avoid doing so, there are situations like this that will arise and bite the unsuspecting member.
