Band :( :)

:grouphug: Hugs to you. If you love being in the band, then chalk this up to experience and move on. Not everyone gets to be "somebody" at the beginning of senior year. These things happen in Real Life too, which is where you'll be in about 10 months. :teeth:

Just so you know, I wasn't anything special in band, either. I played oboe, so in marching season I was relegated to the cymbals :guilty: Great for my bust-line, but not such a sexy instrument. But just the fact that I played an instrument got me a small college scholarship. I put myself through college on that little scholarship and never made higher than second chair(out of two players  )

Have fun, life is short. Don't sweat this. :cheer2:

That is a shame your teacher makes promises and then doesn't keep them. I know everyone stays hang with it. If you truly love it then do stick with it but if you think that you may become bitter or angry everytime you have to perform then don't .

My DD played H2O Polo her whole high school career until her senior year. The coach was a bozo (in my opinion lol) and really catered to the kids whose parents donated LOTS of money. Anyway she decided to quit the team. She tried out for flags. She is now 24 and I was talking to her the other night and she said she was so glad she decided to do that instead of sticking with the polo and being unhappy. She had such a great time.

So if you have ever wondered if you should try out for something else now would be the time. have a GREAT SENIOR YEAR!!!!

Holycow

probably cuz i do lots of musical stuff i know several people who either were or went up for drum major in highschool. and with the majority (at allot of different schools in different states) there were many factors that were taken into consideration when the music director made his/her decision. with some their director given the choice would pass over a more skilled musician in favor of an authority figure who would exact the kind of respect they felt the drum major needed on the field. with some they wanted a 'puppet' who would follow their orders and never question authority. with some it was just a certain quality that was dazzling on the field (one guy i know is the not the best musican, not the best leader-but when he was drum major he was awsome to watch-and it inspired the rest of the band to perform at a level well above previous years).

if you like music consider looking into evening classes at your local community college now-both our local ones let high school musicians in and they have the opportunity to play with some top professional musicians who are very giving in terms of mentoring younger folks. i have several friends people pay top dollar to attend music camps at which they are working, when they could go to the community college and get much more one on one attention with in either the classes they teach or the ones they attend 'just for fun'.

have a great senior year, and while its corny to say '20 years from now noone will remember who drum major/section leader was' (unless you went to highschool with me and a major juicy scandle occurs involving the section leader, the band teacher, crossing state lines and the board of education :teeth: ).

I would stick with it if you enjoy it. Its your senior year! Finish high school off being happy rather than miserable because you dropped something you enjoy. I just got back from band camp a few days ago. At least in our band, we need more than one person to step up and take charge. The flutes, for example, were absolutely clueless this year. At one point, a friend of mine turned to the line of flutes and said "This is a really good diag! It would really come in handy later! How about an arc now!" It must have been so frustrating for the upper classmen in that section. There were only 2 people, though, that actually stepped up and said "listen, this is what we need to do and this is what you better do" Had more people done that, I don't think there would have been as many problems as there were. At one point, the band expands and moves backward. The flutes were right in front of me and were supposed to be in a diag. (I'm in color guard by the way.) The flutes pushed too far back and ended up being a straight line up to one point and then it turned into a diag, so it kind of looked like this if you can picture it... _/ . They were supposed to be like 8 steps in front of me, but were only about 2. My friend (the same one that made the comment I said earlier) turned to them and said "Do you all realize that we are right in front of the color guard? In case you haven't noticed, they have REALLY big metal poles." The flutes just stared at her. She said "and they WILL hit you and it WILL hurt." They got the point and went to where they were supposed to be. My point is that they need as many upperclassmen to get the underclassmen to where they are supposed to be. Even thought you don't have the "official title" of section leader, you can still be a section leader by stepping up and "mentoring the underclassmen.

Ok, coming from experience, one of the reasons I dropped out of band was because I didn't make drum major my junior year and even though I probably would have made it my senior year all of my friends had dropped out so I dropped out as well. I really wish that I hadn't. I really think that I missed out on a lot.

And the boy that I was dating that I thought I would have more time to spend with when I wasn't in band, broke up with me. All of my friends that had dropped out of band that I thought we could hang out together stopped being friends with me. And I really missed marching that year.

Only you can decide what you want to do, but from my personal experience, I wish I would have stayed.
