The discussion of the price per pound came up and someone mentioned that when they were on sale they would buy more than they needed and freeze the rest to use later for muffins..

Sounds like a great idea for muffins (and banana bread as well), but how do you freeze bananas?

If I catch a good sale before I head up to the lake (they would cost me an arm and a leg up there), I would like to freeze some to use later on..

Thanks! :goodvibes

I freeze them already squished up - just measure the amount for your muffin receipe into a freezer bag, seal, and freeze flat so it thaws quickly.

just chuck them in the freezer. I do it all the time. Theyre good for nothing other cooking as theyre mush but I always freeze our "browning" bananas before they get too far gone.

I just score the peel while theyre frozen, let them sit on the counter while I get the rest of the recipe ready and then pull the peel off.

BTW, I also freeze grapes when theyre on sale. Frozen grapes are a great treat when its hot outside!

Also freeze bread heals ( or butts as Im told theyre called LOL) and use them for bread crumbs later.

Any fruit that can be added to a smoothie automatically gets frozen before it goes bad, as does yogurt (before its date) and milk in ice cube trays. All can be used for smoothies and is MUCH cheaper than buying the smoothie mixes out of the freezer section.

I prefer to freeze them peeled and placed in the bag. If I freeze them whole I let them defrost on the counter, cut off the end and squeeze the banana out the end. I only use frozen bananas for banana bread. The freezing breaks down the fibers.

C.Ann... I actually mash mine BEFORE I freeze them. They are just GROSS when you freeze them whole and try and mash them. I find it less gross if they are already mashed.

They turn brown and yucky either way, but for whatever reason, I like to store them mashed.

Thanks for those great additional suggestions! :thumbsup2

I wasn't aware I could freeze all of these things to use later, so it looks like I'll be stocking up on whatever is on sale between now and the day I leave here..:goodvibes
