Baltimore BOT-Fest

20 miles seemed like a great idea this morning before I started.

Lou - Good luck in AC this weekend. Save some for New York.

Hey BOTs!

Mike - From what I can see from your run logs on FB you are totally prepared to crush MCM. You may want to keep your schedule clear for 4/18/2011. Southwest has some good airfare for Boston these days.

Howard - You got to be feeling pretty good about MCM as well. You've been running at a high level this fall.

Cam - Did your co-worker Jessica mention that she blew by me at Mile 17 at LBI? I felt like Bugs Bunny watching the turtle zip by him just as he saw the finish line. She is in awesome shape.

Jodi - Thanks for roping me in for NYC. You, Bruce and I should have an awesome time. Little worried about Bruce though. He may want to downshift and hang back with you and Slowpoke Rodriguez.

Cannot believe I am running AC tomorrow. I guess I am as ready as I can be. LBI 18 was the longest run for me this year. I'm still sore from that race. The weather is supposed to be great and I really do not care how I do (I say that but I'll have some kind of goal by tomorrow). Just hoping I can come out injury free and ready for NYC Part II.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Lou

Lou - Sorry Bud, but you couldn't be more wrong. This easily will be my worst trained for marathon and unlike Jodi, "less is more" just doesn't work for me.

I hope you have/had a good race.

Okay, now I know why you are supposed to taper before a marathon. Running 3 races in a row (13.1, 18, and then 26.2) doesn't work very well. Bottom line...it was one of those races I'm happy I ran...once.

I mustered up enough to run a 4:09:44 but didn't have much gas the whole race. The weather was awesome...50-65 degrees and sunny. Wind was a factor as the race is right along the ocean. Half the race it was in my face and half at my back.

Miles 1-8 I was feeling decent and ran at a 8:35 mpm pace. That was about it though. My quads tightened up at Mile 8, I popped 2 Tylenols, but that didn't work. I found it hard to open my legs up much and had to take baby steps the rest of the way. When we got back on the boardwalk at Mile 10 or so the wind was blowing in my face and running 9 mpm was a struggle.

It wasn't until Mile 16 that the race turned around but at that point I was sore and the wind at my back wasn't as helpful as it should have been. I basically jogged the last 8 or so miles but could muster up much more then a 9:30-10:30 pace. I managed to hustle the last 1/2 mile to squeeze in just under 4:10.

Cons (where do I start)
  • Water stops were confusing. Water and Gatorade were put in the same cups and the volunteers were in no real order. They claimed there would be Gu on the second half but I never saw any. I saw boxes at some of the stations and had to check them out myself. All I found was Butterfinger bars and Oreos...seriously? I did find one station with PowerBars that were like chewing raw hide.
  • Too many races - They had a 10K, 1/2, and full all going off at once. You had all these runners going out together and it made for confusion at the start.
  • Post race food - Worst I have had all year. Water in cups...no bottles. The best I could find was a hot dog vendor who was dishing out free dogs. They had fondue...fondue? I am not a fan of fondue but didn't see the point at a race.
  • The last mile you ran on the boardwalk and had to dodge people left and right. I had some lady walk right in front of me and all I could due was break out a straight arm to her shoulder to keep from flat out tackling her. She yelled at me (I was too tired to stop) and some homeless guy yelled at her, "YOU STEPPED RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GUY!"

Pros
  • Decent course with lots of ocean and bay views.
  • Start area was inside Boardwalk Hall so we got to hang inside until the race started to keep warm.
  • Nice medal and shirt.

Lou~ I am really impressed with your Hershey and AC runs. Your time in AC beat my Marathon PR by about a minute. I don't think I'll see that again for a while either. Congratulations! Your Cons for the AC race seem to really out-weigh the Pros.

_____________________________________________

I went out for what I thought would be 15 on Saturday and I was woefully unprepared. I hadn't taken any gu, only a old stale GoLean Bar (most likely from 2007), one bottle of G2 and I hadn't used any BodyGlide and I was under dressed for the cool temps. I didn't respect the distance either. My headphones for my iPod weren't working so I didn't have music to run with.

Once I got out there I realized that the shin splints I had the day before were still with me. I managed to stop to stretch a couple times and the pain subsided. I made it the 5 miles to the Northern Delaware Greenway. I figured I would try out the new sections which recently opened up. Well, they are open, but they are very hilly and gravel covered (not paved like the rest)... not made for my style of running and very dangerous at high speeds. I almost had to walk through the woods where the new sections of the path were made.

To top it off, I came upon 50 or 60 bibbed runners along the trail running a 1/2 marathon (The Run for the Buds - I hadn't heard of it or I would have probably ran in it) and I ran about 6 miles or so with the upper 20% of the runners. Once I got out there and within a mile of their finish, I took another fork and ran towards downtown Wilmington. I turned around right in front of the Wilmington Zoo. Ten miles from my house. I realized at that time that I should turn around because my 15 miles were going to be 20 (20.19 to be exact). So, I turned and made the trek towards home. Towards mile 15 or so, I simply ran out of steam and had to pretty much walk it in. I was sore, was concerned that my nips might be bleeding or close to it, I was cold and I was exhausted.

I learned a lesson, one I think I should have known from before. :rolleyes1 This weekend when I go out for 15 (and 15 only this time), I'll be prepared for the conditions. :thumbsup2 Hopefully my results will be much better.

MCM is looming...

Howard: Interesting run, sounds like an adventure more than a training run. Do you take advantage of any on the on course support from the half you briefly joined?

Lou: I think AC worked much better as a half than as a full marathon. Overall I liked the race but agree with a lot of the issues you pointed out. The packet pickup was awful and had us waiting in an hour long line at Bally's. The morning of the race I did appreciate having an indoor area to wait/gather. The race start was totally disorganized and not broken up by pace at all as far as I could tell. It took about a half mile for the crowds to thin and people to settle into their pace. The post race food was much better at my finish time of 2:20: water in bottles, tons of fruit and bagels, hot dogs, fondue, popcorn, water ice, and champagne. I personally had a good race thanks in large part to the broad shouldered man wearing a blue shirt in front of me who served as an excellent wind break for me. By the end of my race the boardwalk was getting crowded by random walkers and people pushing surry carts, so I can only imagine how it was by the end of the full. I think I would do it again (so nice and local) but only the half.

Just checking in. The wind appears to be sucked out if this thread.

May run 12 miles tomorrow because I barely ran at all this week.

Have a nice weekend!

Plenty of "wind" here! But I just blame it on the dog. ;)

Bruce hasn't gone into cardiac arrest yet, so that's good. Otherwise, not much else going on here. I think this entire cardiac incident was a ruse just so he wouldn't have to run NYC. He's so hating me right now :rotfl2:.

Just checking in.

Lou- I'm very impressed with all your races. Way to go.

Howard- that was some 15 miler you ran. How'd you like the Steeler game?

Jodi- howdy, hope Bruce is doing well

Jen- hope your doing ok after your yogurt LR

Not much new with me. Doing some shorter runs, did a 6 miler on Saturday, and trying to get in decent shape for the WDW half.

Take care Bots.

Jen~ I actually stopped at a water/Gu station and asked them about the race (that I was now part of) and said that I had just ran in the Delaware Distance Classic 15K the weekend before. The nice lady offered me some water but I thankfully declined and went on my way. In hind sight, I should have taken on some Gu (maybe two). :thumbsup2

I got out for my last LR prior to MCM this weekend on Saturday. I posted on FB during my run... here are some of the updates:

5 miles down in 44:07 (8:49 Pace)

10 miles down in 1:27:18 (8:49 Pace)

My 15K time was 1:21:12- about 3 min slower than the 15K I ran 2 weeks ago. (8:49 Pace)

Intermediate post: 13.1 miles (half marathon distance) at 1:56:42. (8:49 Pace) Note: Close to my Ridgefield Half time.

Finished!! Miles: 15.0, Time: 2:14:50 (8:59 Pace)

It's TAPER TIME!!!!!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the MCM'ers this weekend!!!! Pay attention to FB for dinner travel updates.

Dave~ I was at the Halloween Parade my son, Andrew, was marching in so I didn't get to see much of it (maybe the first 10 min.). I was following along on my iPhone though. I'm glad they squeeked by with a win!

SURPRISE!!
Sneaking in to WISH those of you doing MCM good luck!! SOME people who aren't on FB can only be reached here... I just wanted to make sure you knew that I would be watching as the results post.

Safe travels, fast feet, and the wind at your back!!

:goodvibes

Is it too late to defer?

Don't you wish... your less is more theory of late has been more than I have done and consistently faster. Of course, you are younger, have more of a runner's build and get more training in than I do. You'll do just fine! I see a BQ in your future. :thumbsup2

Anne~ Thanks for the note! I appreciate the good WISHes and that you'll be following the finish results.

Jodi & Colleen~ I will miss having you there.

Matt & Cindy~ I hope to see you out there Scream Teaming on Sunday!

Those of us running will be trying to meet up at the "W" Bag Drop Truck prior to going to the Starting Area.

I'm looking forward to dinner tomorrow with some BOTS/WISHers and a few special guests. :cool1::banana::dance3::yay::woohoo:

Good Luck to our 10K runners and Marathoners!!!! Oooh Raaah!

Safe Travels!!!

Just a quick shout out to everyone running this weekend. Have a great race ant lots of fun. Wish I could be there but Halloween is still too big a thing to my DD. Can't wait to hear reports.

Jodi and Lou: I love the fund-raising site and the shirts. Can I donate to get a shirt? You may have found my price.

Not much here. Getting ready for Halloween and trying to get in some long runs. Supposed to do 18 this weekend, we'll see if it actually happens.
