I found this, let us know how they turn out, I've always wanted to try it.

Crock-Pot Baked Potatoes

Recipe By : Rival Crock-Pot Cookbook

Categories : Crockpot Potatoes

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
Potatoes -- use 6-12 of them

Prick pots with fork. Wrap them in foil. Fill Crock-Pot with 6 to 12
potatoes. Cover. Go away. Cook on Low 8 to 10 hours (High: 2 1/2 to 4
hours]. Come back. Don't you dare add water!

Interesting idea although I imagine that the skins of the crocked potatoes would be pretty gross.

Why do you suppose? If you wrap them, they'd stay dry, no?

I always sprinkle them with a little oil, garlic salt and Season All before wrapping them in foil in the oven, so I imagine you could still do that in the crockpot? I don't like the skins but it makes them smell yummy, and you get a little in your potato when you squish it open.

I don't normally prick them unless its for the microwave. I also wasn't going to wrap them. 8 hours though???? It only takes and hour in the oven. Lets see if I get them in now...................

Thanks I may have to wait until tomorrow.

Let me know how they turn out. I'm going ot have to try that.

Since I usually make potatos with a roast, I just throw the potatos in WITH the roast in the crockpot. By the time the roast is done, so are the taters.

I would think it would only take a few hours for just the potatos if you do them on high, it's shouldn't take eight, although it wouldn't hurt to leave them in that long.

Has anyone actually tried this ??
thanks.

I like the skins of my baked potatoes crispy. That's why I rub them in oil or butter, season with garlic salt, and leave them unwrapped while baking. I suppose that potatoes baked in a crockpot would be better than not having baked potatoes at all (although I don't understand why you wouldn't just microwave them. :confused3

I think the point of the 8 hours in the crockpot is so you can have yummy potatoes ready when you walk in the door. I might have to try this, I never have the time when I come home to do baked potatoes. I think if you rub them with oil like you normally would they will come out crispy. And you need to prick them no matter how you cook them because the moisture inside can cause them to explode if the steam can't escape. I've learned that the hard way. :rotfl:

The skin won't get crispy unless the temperature inside the crockpot gets well above 212F. The reason that you put oil on the skins when you bake them in an oven is that the hot air inside the oven does not provide enough concentrated heat for the skins to cook. It is very similar to the difference between baking french fries in an oven versus cooking them in oil at the same temperature. The oil on the skin causes the potatoes to fry.

I had to laugh about exploding baked potatoes. I didn't used to prick the skin of my potatoes until one day when I heard a large BANG in my oven and opened the door to find a perfectly skinned baked potato on the rack and a perfectly cooked potato skin next to the potato.

Since crockpots cooks so slowly, I think that you would be hard pressed to explode one. I think that we need to contact the MythBusters and see if they would like to devote a show to trying to explode potatoes in ovens, microwaves, and crockpots.

BTW - The easiest way to get a baked potato quickly is to call Outback Steakhouse and order them from their Takeaway Tucker window. And while you are at it, you can order a Bloomin' Onion too.

Another way of baking potatoes in the crockpot is in kosher salt. Put a layer of kosher salt on the bottom of the crockpot. Put potatoes in crockpot and cover with kosher salt. Cook on low 8 hours. The salt becomes hard, break it and pull potatoes out. You can reuse the salt. The potatoes are very fluffy, the skins are salty. My DH doesn't like them this way, he thinks that the skins are too salty but the insides are really good.
