Bail out doesn't pass!

Every single one of the these elected representatives needs to be fired. If they can't get past this petty partisan crap to make something that HAS to happen for this country then they DO NOT PUT THIS COUNTRY'S INTEREST FIRST. I do not like this bail out plan but I like this Congress even less. They are all so less than productive and being paid more than they are worth.

I also think the average American does not understand why we need this bailout. They just see the everyday American loosing their house but a CEO of a failing bank getting away with millions. I just don't think the everyday average person understands how this will all trickle down to them and it needs to be explained in everyday average words but someone that does not represent either party.

I agree with you Tina. If they can get that explanation out, I bet a lot more constituents will be for the bill, and it won't be such "political suicide" to vote for it. While I think "golden parachutes" are a crappy way to spend taxpayer money, in the big scheme of things, this bailout needs to pass- and if a fraction of it goes to CEOs, it's better than the entire economy crashing.

I only saw the ACORN earmark mentioned here on the DIS, I don't think it was ever in the bill. I have yet to see the Republicans come up with a better idea. I think the Republicans want to have it both ways. They don't want to accept responsibility for the mess to begin with and now they don't want to stand up and vote to fix the problem. Sure it is unpopular but sometimes you have to grow a pair and do the right thing.

until you have read the whole bill and understand what it all means and how it will play out how... can you make it sound like the package is a perfect fix :confused3 and why should the Rep grow you know whats....

Where have they been the last 2 years that they had the majority vote....this is a mistake made by both parties...not just the republicans.
And if you feel it was just the republicans running screwing up everything than where were the Dems ....were they just sitting there twiddling there thumbs.

This is a problem for all of us....we are all affected..it is not the time to make blame. Both parties need to agree...and I am sure you dont want the DEMS to force all to sign it and than it does not work and it turns out to be the DEms fault...I sure dont.

So why dont the DEMS just grow some and do the changes that the REP want changed...works both ways ya know :thumbsup2

I know the Republicans weren't satisfied that it was the best bill possible, but what exactly was the sticking point??

Democrats: Yea - 141; Nay - 94
Republicans: Yea - 66; Nay - 132
Totals: Yea - 207; Nay - 226
The House needs 217 votes to pass the bill.

It was Pelosi's fault....:lmao: Yea, she is a snit. But that is not news.

Seriously the House Repubs are going to shovel those numbers down my throat and blame the Dems.
Um...look at the numbers. McCain is not a leader of his party. He is a "Maverick" outside of it.
It clearly shows how his party does not like him.
The numbers don't lie.

Warren Buffet just put $5 billion into financial stocks because he thought the feds were going to bail out the financials. Of course he wants a bailout -- He'll make billions after his stocks go up. He saw an opportunity to make billions on under-valued stocks.

No way. Buffet isn't going to make a $5 billion bet on what is basically a roll of the dice. He's the best stock investor in the country due to exhaustive research and an intuition that only he has. He's not going to bet on the whim of a bunch of politicians.

Absolutely agree. I've been watching CNBC during the day for the last couple weeks, and the commentary has repeatedly mentioned the fact that Bush and others have had multiple opportunities to explain this to the American People in a way that brings it home to them. It's like they don't trust us to understand this - well at least TRY TO EXPLAIN IT IN LAYMAN'S LANGUAGE!!!

Watch the credit markets closely, and listen for signs that small business is having trouble with credit for their day to day operations. If that happens, be very very very afraid.....

JMO... I don't think this is the time to panic (Or maybe Woody would say this is the perfect time to panic).

The bailout was a bad idea, so I am glad it didn't pass. (I'm probably the only one here) We have to stop living on credit. As we have seen in the last few bailouts, it doesn't fix anything and bigger in debt we go. Some type of bailout will pass, but it needs to be a RESPONSIBLE one. The economy is on a downward slope. All we can do right now is put on that helmet, buckle that belt and hold on. We'll all make it through. We're going to lose money, loans will be scarce, but in the grand scheme of things we will survive.

Heck, if you have money right now, this is a buyers market. Perfect time to buy some stock at a real CHEAP price. Just pick a good one.

I don't like having to bailout Wall Street, but I think it has to be done. I am ticked that the Republicans are not stepping up to the plate. They are more worried about getting reelected than the state of the economy.

There are Dems also opposing it aren't there? I thought I read a post that said Dems nay: 92 and Republicans nay: 132. So it isn't a completely partisan issue. I'm not trying to argue, just pointing out that there is opposition across the board for whatever reason.
I am torn over the whole thing. I agree something has to be done, but its infuriating that our tax money (not just mine, but ALL of our tax money) is bailing out these companies that ran themselves into the ground. Also, is it just me, or does 10 days seem like too little time to draft a plan of this magnitude?
Clearly something has to be done to stablize things, but its not clear to me what that is.

Yes - I am annoyed at those 11 "whoever" Dems who couldn't step up and "save" this country's financial systems.

But the REPUBLICAN president pleaded today for this bill to pass, warning of dire consequences.... I would have thought that the REPUBLICAN representatives that voted lock, stock and barrel with him throughout these 7 years, could bring themselves to do it one more time.

I hope ALL of these elected officials who voted "Nay" know what they're doing.........

It wasn't just 11, it was 94 Dems who said "Nay". Pelosi only had to sweet talk 10 on her own side, but she's too full of snark. Her leadership abilities are pitiful.

I don't know either.

But for what ever reason enough Rep didn't step up and do what needed to be done. I would like to see a list of who voted yes, no, or wasn't there to vote. Because I would like to know where my people voted, and where McCain and Obama voted.

Do you want to know because it will affect your future vote?? I really don't understand this disgust towards representatives listening to their constituents. I know some people think that government knows best, but if the people can have this sort of an impact to stand up and say they don't want this sort of bailout and actually be heard, then I find that speaks to the strength of our democracy.

I assume they will not resume talks until Thursday, since tomorrow and Wednesday are the Jewish High Holidays.

Do you think the VP debates will still be Thursday night, or if this will stall them?

Pelosi should be ashamed of herself.

Why in the HECK would she go and do and say something like that right before you have a critical vote were you need support from the other side!?!?!?! Was this supposed to provide "cover" for Democrats to vote for the bill?!?!?! "Rubbing their nose in it" and being inflammatory, aren't very effective bipartisan tactics.

I never said it was a perfect fix, what I said is I don't see the Republicans coming up with a better idea. Each side was supposed to get half of their members to vote, half the Dems voted for it, half the Repubs did not.

It needed bipartisian support, it did not get it.

How in the world would postponing the VP debates help anything?

Only if Biden would use the time saved to tend to the matter at hand. Frankly, I think we're all safer if he attends the debate!

The Repubs did come up with a better idea: insurance for the bad debt vs. the bailout. If you weren't so partisan, you might have taken the time to learn about their alternative.

Pelosi needs to go. She can't even lead her own party anymore.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree, approve or disapprove. I'm just wondering if this will be considered a cause for a delay.
