Bagging your own groceries rant

Okay, I know at places like ALDI you are supposed to bag your own groceries. I had an experience tonight that I thought I would ask what you all think.

I bought about $130 worth of food (a cart full) from Cub Foods tonight. I was one of the only people in the store. After the cashier ran up my items he asked do you want me to help you bag them? I said yes, if you aren't busy (which he obviously wasn't). He filled a couple of bags and another lady came up so he checked her out. Then he just stood there and watched us bag our own stuff. I took me about five more minutes to finish bagging my stuff and he just watched me.

Am I just spoiled to think that a person getting paid by a store should bag my items rather than standing around? Also, I watched the cashier in the other open lane and she was bagging people's groceries in her lane. Should I make a complaint to the manager or am I overreacting? I did take note of the guy's name before I left.

I don't think I would say anything. If it became a common thing then I might mention it to someone.

Is Cub Food a "bag it your self" store? If it is, I wouldn't complain.

I have a similar problem in regular grocery stores. Believe me, I don't mind bagging my own groceries and saving the cashier time and angst over someone waiting due to me, but I don't think it should be an expectation.
I would say something.

Hmm...I might mention it during a future trip to the store if I see a manager, but maybe not use the person's name...just kinda maybe say ... aren't cashiers usually supposed to bag?

However, I prefer to bag my own groceries...some of the bag jobs you get sometimes...heavy cans in with eggs or bread or bananas?????

We used to have Cub Foods here, now they call it Winco on the West Coast. Anyway, they are a "You bag it yourself" kinda place. I think if the cashiers offer to help that is great, but not part of their job. If they get a break in the action and choose to take a breather, that is their perogative. If your Cub is a bag it yourself kinda place, then I do not see why a mention should be made to the manager. IMHO

The chain of grocery stores up here are bag yourself stores. They do not help you period. I always buy at least 200 plus and I always bag them myself. I do however do it at MY pace. Yesterday they had like only 3 lanes open on a friday night, yes there was a storm and hardly anyone was out but still. I told the cashier I was not hurrying and that I was worn out. So I took my time. She was nice about it and I think she had to shut down her line anyways. Sometimes they ask in a snotty tone "do you want me to help?", as they have a line forever. I usually say no because I know they won't help and are supposed to say that. I think I did say yes once only for her to shut down the line and call someone. So I didn't do that again lol. What gets me is when at the begining I say I am taking my time, they seem to try to go lightning fast. I mean they are not helping so I am going to go at my pace.

our Cub has bag it your self lines and a few they bag it lines. This is a recent change so maybe yours has changed to bag it yourself. I have 2 questions where did he put the other ladies stuff if yours was still on the belt? if it was split into 2 then it was a self bag line. And can I shop with you? you must get a lot more for your 130.00 than I do for it to take 5 minutes gee thats about 4 or 5 bags at the most.

And most importantly I imagine he was a teen and you broke a cardinal rule with teens you gave him an out when you said "if you are not busy" teens are experts at working options like that! He was probably busy thinking about where to go after work.

If it happens all the time than Id say something if it was me.. if its just a oneoff I probably wouldnt mention it.. Personally I prefer to self bag.. I cant stand the way some baggers bag my stuff... this is a big pet peeve of mine.. I cant stand squished bread or buns..

My husband is a manager at Cub Foods. The cashiers don't do any bagging, but there is usually a cart pusher or front end manager available to bag if needed, say for a disabled customer. All the lanes have 2 conveyer belts past the cashier so 2 customers can be bagging at once so the line isn't held up. Our store has been that way at least as long as he's worked there, which is about 6 years. I prefer to bag my own anyway to make sure all the perishables are kept together. Then when I get home, I only take in the fridge and freezer stuff, and I make my husband bring in the rest and put it away after he gets home from work!

I think I would let once go, although I know it can be aggrevating when employees stand around and not do much. At the grocery store I much perfer to bag my own and in paper.

I'm the opposite- i HATE people bagging my groceries- 13 years with my X and I never liked it when he tried. I HATE it when cashiers bag it. Thats one reason I try not to shop at walmart for groceries, even if I seperate it on the belt- they screw it up when they bag it.

They've never seen my kitchen, how do they know if the peanut butter should be in the same bag as the Mayo?

this is happening alot at my Kroger store !!!!! and they are sopose to provide this service and help out but they rarely ask that anymore.................

I prefer to bag my own anyway to make sure all the perishables are kept together.

I like to do that too, I do carry it all in and put it up at once but still I like having it all organized and easy to put where it goes (we have a pantry and carry a lot of bags back to it).

But, I hate to start bagging while they are ringing, as I usually like to try to watch to make sure things are ringing up correctly.

The Cub Foods I have all been to have been bag it yourself.... It's one of the saving features. So I have a feeling that complaining won't get you anywhere (except maybe a strange look from the manager)

I always want to ask the Kroger baggers if they get paid by the bag. I can buy 5 items and have four bags. What is it with them? I consolidate as I load into the car LOL!

at many cub food they are not required to bag your groceries, if you want to complain to the manager you can but in their union contract as casiers bagging is not a requirement.

I have come to prefer to bag my own groceries. I actually get annoyed when they start stuffing things in bags at random just to get me out of there. I know they need to move along the line but I am always getting things crushed or ruined.

I hate bagging my own groceries. That's why I drive out of my way to do my grocery shopping at a store where they not only bag it for you, they also still take it out and load it in the car for you!
