Baggage question when flying

We have not flown in many years. We haven't flown since they have started charging for bags. Is it the total bags for the family or per person. Example: We have 4 people. Could we each have a bag and pay for one bag each or is it a total of 4? It does make a difference with prices. If it is 1 bag for each then it is $80.00. If it is a total of 4 then it is $100.00. I hope this makes sense.

Am I right that you have to pay again for the return trip??

It's per person. Each person can check 1 bag at the first bag price.

Correct. Each passenger can check one bag and pay the first checked bag charge.

To answer your other question, you do need to pay the baggage charges separately each way on a roundtrip flight.
