Bag Search, does it help?

No and no. I'd feel perfectly safe if they discontinued the bag searches. The best kind of security is the kind you don't see and Disney already has plenty of that already.

The truth is 9/11 happened.
Since 9/11 Disney has had to spend mega dollars on security.
Not just bag checkers, but tons of hidden cameras, emergency evacuation plans, and lots of behind the scenes security.
If Disney did not have to hire all that security, ticket prices could be lower and they could hire more CMs to keep the parks cleaner and open longer.
Other amusement parks and hotels don't require the same security measures that Disney does. Every time the government raises the threat level more measures have to be taken and more money is diverted for that. We only see a small part of the security. Please people I know you may not want to think about it but Disney was a target. That's why it's a no fly zone.
Will that keep me from returning to the "Happiest Place On Earth."
No way! We are bringing our 3 year old grandson (and his parents of course LOL) for his first Disney trip. Our group will have our bags ready to be checked.
Anything to help everyone get through the lines quicker.

Last July when crowds were quite large, I didn't think the wait took long at all. I am glad they do it. It sure can't hurt. But I think metal detectors would take forever. They would have to redo the entire set up I would think. I got a pacemaker at 13 and being pulled aside at that age in front of a crowd would have been extremely upsetting. Now at 37 I wouldn't care, but all the hand pats would take a long time.

Which was the point I made earlier -- people who are critiquing the "bag check" are like those who assume that the size of an iceberg can be assessed solely by what is viewable above water level. :rolleyes2

I jsut see it as an inconvenience,(the bag checks) I don't feel any safer, to tell you the truth

That is so true.
But then it is Disney and we see what Disney wants us to see.
Thus the top of the iceburg only.

While I see your side, I also think stopping 80 yo women on their way to gamble in Vegas is a waste of time.

What about this though..hypothetically.. sweet, little 80yo woman is flying to visit her family. She's sweet, but absent minded and thinks she's misplaced her purse. While she looks around her someone slips a small bomb into the bottom of her purse and puts it back on the seat next to her. She sees it, thinks she's just losing her mind, and doesn't think twice about getting on the plane. The bomb has a slient timer set at 1.5 hrs, so no one hears it. And she's a little old woman so no one checks her bags.. She boards the plane and the bomb goes off.

Still not want to check the bags of everyone? That's why they ask if your bags have been with you at all times..

I don't think anyone is making assumptions about the behind the scenes security (or the iceberg below the water level), just that the bag check itself does not really do anything and is just a "show". Very few guards check very thoroughly, and the few that do aren't going to find anything on your person.

Eliminating the bag check shouldn't have any affect on the behind-the-scenes security, nor does anyone (reasonably) think that there isn't more going on than what we see.

The iceberg is still under the water no matter if we can see the peak or not. Personally, I want to forget what a scary, evil world we sometimes live in when I visit WDW - and every time I approach the gates of a park the magical feeling is ripped out from under me because I have to see and participate in the futile exercise of "bag checking" because they want to fool people into a false sense of security. I'd feel better if we didn't have it at all, because I know WDW is in no more or less danger now than it was prior to 2001. Others feel differently, but I can honestly say it does nothing for my feeling of safety.

Bag searches are not there to make guests "feel safer." They do serve a purpose and the main purpose is--- SURPRISE --- to slow the entry into the park down.
While bag checkers are checking bags other security can concentrate on those guests entering the park who are NOT carrying bags.
There are more cameras per square foot at WDW then almost any other place in the US I have ever visited or that I know about . If you know where and what to look for you can see them every few yards. And that is only the more obvious ones.
Disney has a great lock down in place. They are able to find lost children in a matter of minutes. There are many plain clothes under cover security in place. Some of the most shabby dressed tourists are really security.
Watch for them when you enter the parks just inside the turnstiles. They are there quietly observing everyone us.
Have fun everyone after all you are at Disney!
