Bag check?

Does Universal do bag-check like Disney? I'm trying to decide if we should go "bagless" or not!

Yes they do. They have you put your bags through an x-ray machine. It isn't as bad as Disney's bag checking process, at least it isn't when it's moderately busy. If you can go bagless it helps with skipping the lockers for certain rides.

I've discovered when I came back to AP for Universal there is no bagless security line anymore. However, the bag check process is 10x better than Disney. It's a well oiled machine.

I've always had to wait a little bit for Disney check in, but nothing too ridiculous, but last time at MK it was 45 minutes. While it was under construction it wasn't near any peak seasons. Also, it didn't help that it seemed that our person was extra thorough in checking bags. The person even made a guest open a book that was in her hand that looked like a diary. It wasn't until then I expressed my annoyance and said, "Really?"

Even on "good" Disney security check days, I've waited far more less than I have at Universal. I've only waited at most perhaps five minutes? I'd say maybe a minute, or two longer if the lines are really long. Either way, regardless of how long of a line it is the lines move much faster at Universal than Disney.

It's not like Disney at all. Much, much more well run. Bags go through an x-ray machine and guests go through a metal detector. Very quick.

We've been through security at the RPR water taxi dock a hundred times, but this month one guy asked me to take my belt off and put it through the xray. I guess they recently confiscated one of those dagger belt buckles. I went beltless the rest of the trip.

Going bagless will help you avoid the ride lockers. You can use a 3 prong fanny pack to avoid the lockers on all but Hulk, RRR, and maybe one other???(can't remember)

Isn't it because it will set off the metal detector you walk through?

Gringotts ::yes::

Nope. You can use a fanny pack on Gringotts.

Used to be on Dragon Challenge but that has changed now. There are only super restrictions on Hulk and RRR....the coasters that will fling things out of your pockets onto unsuspecting guests below.

That makes sense, but like @Squirlz stated, in the past when I had my dad they would always allow him to go through and not take it off, because he would point out it would be his belt. Then they would use the wand which he understood. While it has been ages since my dad has been there, last month when he came they insisted he take his belt off and he put it back on once he came through.

They seem to be trying to keep things flying at security. We were so impressed at how quickly they are processing people and that might be one of the things that helps keep things running smoothly.

Could also be that someone had stored a weapon of some sort in their "belt buckle area" and now they are making everyone remove the belts out of precaution.

I am thinking the same thing. My father has a clip that stores his phone. So every time he would forget it and he would after the fact grab it and show them what it was and they were fine with it, but then waved a wand on him. Another time they might have not been so lucky. However, this time, the whole belt itself went off which (believe it, or not) saved time. So, it could be either reason.

Security before I took a break from having AP was fast, but it seems since I came back it's even faster. I believe part of it has to do with things like that such as asking people to remove things ahead of time. It's a well oiled machine. It seems security as well as guests know exactly what to do.

The only negative I have for it is that sometimes it feels aggressive if you're not moving, or doing things quite fast enough. As people get aggressive with grabbing things, or shout. Luckily my anxiety is not that bad, but for someone who can be easily triggered, it wouldn't be a good situation.

Like I said, they recently found a belt buckle dagger on a guest. I used to have to just show them my buckle, now they want you to take your belt of and xray it.

lol, I thought you were being sarcastic. I didn't know that such a thing existed!!!!
