Bad Spelling

Does bad spelling annoy you when you read these boards? I know that sometimes I hit the wrong key and make a typo, but I really try to spell words correctly.

Do things like:

seperate
descrimination
whereever
ect

remind you of fingernails on the chalkboard?

Or am I just a former teacher who still likes words to be spelled correctly?

And don't get me started on those posts that were written with the Caps Lock on.

The main one that bugs me is when people say "congradulations".

Also, I always notice mistakes with their/there/they're, to/too, and its/it's. That's more than just a spelling mistake, though, and it is probably just the Enlish teacher's daugther coming out in me!

For me, I like my spelling to be correct, though some of the early morning riddle gang may think that not to be true, LOL. That is due usually to no coffee yet and no eyeglasses on at that point of the AM. I most often proof a posting before I submit, and also after. If it is a long, involved post (lord knows I have had some of those here, LOL ), I most often will do it in Word and spell-check/grammar-check.

As for others' postings, I will be aware of misspellings, but it does not really 'bother' me as such. CAPS do, as it is difficult to read, and long posts, with no paragraph structure, will also. On those, my eyes glaze over and I do not read them.

Some folks are just not attune to spelling correctly, and, like in real life with vocalizing, if a person can get their point across, that is basically okay with me. I do think some people misspell here on purpose, part of their MO, LOL.

It annoys me the most when it is in the subject line. Usually, I don't care but I try to correct my spelling errors since I know they are distracting to the reader.

There, their and they're errors are most annoying to me.

Yes. I can't spell for beans but I will type a questionable word in MS Word or look it up to try and get it right.

I wish all chat areas had spell checkers but, of course, people would have to use them.

I usually notice errors because I love words, spelling, and grammar. But I don't judge people's intelligence just because they don't spell well. I do admit, however, that I don't have much patience for overly long, convoluted, all-caps, or all-bold posts. I usually skip over those.

And I freely admit that I make typos (and misspell words) occasionally, too. So please don't hold that against me

My DH is one of the worst spellers on the boards.....so, I just ignore it....he just can't help it....Can't spell to save his life...

When I graduated High School, I wasn't the best speller, but by the time I got out of college, I was better. most of my spelling errors are typos. I was given a link a while back, it is a good place;

it is a shareware (free) spell-checker that works in internet explorer.

oh, and Dan Murphy, didn't you know that all caps is considered yelling?

I tend to read over it when it's a "difficult" word, but I do find that it's hard to read posts if they're just full of spelling and grammar errors. People can post that way if they want to, but unless I'm really interested in what they want to say, I probably won't read it.

I have the hardest time reading posts without any caps or periods and things like u instead of you. I'm an English major and was a writer/editor before I became a mom, and stuff like that simply takes too much of my time to read. Punctuation makes life easier.

I admit it disturbs me ALOT, but I have a degree in English and that's just who I am!

I agree with skporter that I never equate it with the person's intelligence because know how to spell is not learned, it's just a part of the brain that either is advanced or not working for some, not a sign of intelligence at all.

What I cannot stand is run on sentences, u instead of you, i instead of I and just constant BAD grammar. Also, I feel if you are playing around it's appropriate, but if you're trying to make a point it is very distracting.

I try to spell things correctly but sometimes my fingers move more quickly than my brain and I misspell words, usually it is mostly typos.

Bad spelling and grammar definitely annoys me. It always has, and probably always will. I know that my posts aren't flawless, though, because sometimes a typo slips past, and sometimes I'm just to lazy to care about proper grammar. And I understand that not everyone else cares about it as much as I do, so I definitely don't judge other posters because of their spelling errors or anything like that!

OK, Nick summoned me to this thread so I'll now have to confess. I can't type. There it is out!!! (Like ya'll haven't noticed it before...) I can look at what I've typed and see that it is all messed up, but to be honest I'm lucky to steal a few minutes on the computer away from the kids and I'm sure many of you can relate - I need to fill my DIS addiction every so often. I think I just think faster than I type or is it vice versa??? I've seen a thread like this before not so long ago, and I was referred to it also. It has become part of my DIS character so if I do go back and correct my typing I'll usually get a response that they don't think it is me. Sorry if it bothers anyone, just skip over my posts.

(To prevent anyone from any mild discomfort, I'll copy and paste this into my spell check in Word before I post...)
