i got stopped (routine) - anyway I was arrested for a library book!!!! what? a book? my dd checked out a library book and she said she turned it in but i kept getting notices about this book I talked to her about it and told her she needed to take care of this. she said she did and i didn't get any more notices. ok end of story right? wrong! i don't know what happened dd still insists that she took care of this. I was in jail for about 4 hours :sad2: i had to bond out and when it was all said and done i thought I was going to have to pay over $600. but hubby was able to get them to drop the charges and i have to pay $55 plus 130 to be bonded out!! geez :sad2:

remember to check to see if YOU have any over due books! all I can say is WOW!

here is my question since I don't know for sure if dd took care of this or if this the library's fault but if is dd fault i need ideas on how to make her understand the cause and effect of her actions.

I was thinking about taking her to the library and making her work off the money I had to pay $ an hour!!! what would you do?

thanks

You were sent to jail because of a library book???? We've got drug dealers and rapists walking the streets but watch out for those mom's with past due library books :sad2:

I know the police was baffled as well they treated me very well compared to some of the others and they talked to me like i was human but i had never been arrested b4 so i had no idea what to expect. I got hit on by some nasty guy then there was a girl on suicide watch then another guy came in screaming and cursing and they ended up putting him in a holding cell cuffed. me? they just let me sit in the waiting area till i got to bond out. geez i was never so scared in my life! :scared:

I am surprised we are not hearing about you on the news, too, since it seems to be such a big deal for this kind of thing to happen.

My sister got arrested in college for an overdue movie. A little mom and pop rental store said she never returned a movie (which she had) but they claimed she still owed money. The cops showed up for her during class and handcuffed her.. Those cops kept apologizing to her and were very nice but Yup, it happens.

Note to self: Don't cross the librarians.

I guess there is a rash of library crime we're cracking down on nationwide!

:rotfl2:

While I agree that restitution must be paid, it cost waaay more than the price of the book to arrest you, book you, etc. This was a case of a municipality with too much time on their hands. We've got real crime where I live - I doubt that anyone would be arrested for an overdue library book.

Not nearly as extreme but my high school library was after me to return a book I knew I had dropped off, it was to the poin they were going to ask my parents to pay for a replacement since I'd obviously "lost" it. I was at the library looking for another book when on a whim I went to the shelf where my "lost" book would be. Sure enough, it was on the shelf. I took it to the librarian and she took care of it.

So, if your daughter insists she took care of it, the first thing I'd do is go look on the shelf, they may have put it back but forgot to check it back in the computer.

I totally agree my dad was so mad that i told dh to NOT bring him LOL :goodvibes :sad2:

good idea! thanks i will have my son do that since he still has a library card :goodvibes

I'm so dumbfounded that I don't even know how to respond!!

pixiedust: here's some pixie dust for you!

I agree.. What a ridiculous waste of time and money..:sad2:

One reason I stay away from libraries. Those librarians are some evil people. And don't even get me started on those people who don't return library books...they're all evil I tell you, evil. ;)

Seriously, that's just wrong. As a prvious poster already said, we have drug dealers an rapists walking the streets someone gets picked up for not returning a library book.

WHAT???? :scared:

I am a librarian, and I never ever heard of such a thing. What we do is send people's names to collection agencies if they have big fines they aren't paying. I have dealt with panicked people who were shocked that we got collection agencies to deal with them. Most people think libraries just shrug off the loses, I guess! :confused3

Wow. What a coincidence that 2 people would be arrested with such strikingly similar stories on such a obscure thing.
