Jim Hill Media reports that Matt Ouimet, President of Disneyland, will be taking over the position vacated by Al Weiss, former President of Walt Disney World.

Matt's next move

I've been extremely impressed with what Matt did for Disneyland Resort and this news distresses me. I only hope his replacement will keep things moving forward.

Actually, Jim Hill is only reporting a rumor. As with any rumor, it may turn out to be true. It may not.

In Jim Hills' words, "word has begun leaking out of the Mouse House that Disney management has already found the perfect new President for WDW. And he's Matt Ouimet, the current President of Disneyland."

As rumors go, this one is quite believable. At least from the outside, it appears that Matt Ouimet is doing a great job at Disneyland (and that he did a great job at Disney Cruse Line before that). Mr. Ouimet seems very well qualified to take over a bigger assignment at WDW, now that Al Weiss has moved up.

But remember that Jim Hill also had a lot of people believing that Disney Cruise Line would announce a contract for a third ship in July 2005, while the Disney Magic spent the night docked in Los Angeles Harbor. Jim Hill got that one wrong.

I certainly hope it's just a rumor. Matt's done an incredible job at DLR and I'd like to see it continue.

I'm thrilled to hear this. Emmer can keep up Matt's work and WDW needs Ouimet, not that Weiss has been bad, but he has gotten very stale IMO and WDW is a big, big place to have such halitosis.

My reaction is mixed. I've read so much about how Disneyland had been laid to waste pre-Ouimet. That wasn't the Disneyland I visited in May and October of this year. Clearly he had done a marvelous job leading that park to the place is was this year.

WDW doesn't really need that kind of "turnaround" guy in my opinion. But, it would be great to have someone who has proven that they "get it" at the parks I frequent the most.

But, my fear is that Disneyland has the possibility of slipping back. But, if Emmer is the kind of leader that can keep the pace set by his predecessor, it will be good all around.

Well, even with Ouimet, the question has been whether the sprucing up was a one time effort for the grand 50th marketing campaign, or if it really was a permanent change. Many have pointed out that Pressler/Harris did quite a bit of sprucing up when they came on board as well. That's not to say that anyone is saying Ouimet might be another Pressler/Harris. He has made other positive changes as well. But at the same time, there's also not enough info to annoint him as the "answer" either.

Hopefully the intent was to make the changes permanent, and that will continue with Emmer.

Then there's the follow-up question, which was, ok, now the place is "neat and pretty", as it should always be, what next? Was the next step going to be taken?

Of course, a lot of the answer to that will be determined at even higher levels.

Rumor or not, quite possibly it's time for Weiss to go, {been in that position too long?} Sort of like Ei$ner, no?

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 I am confused by your comment, Al Weiss has already left the position, he was promoted in November, so the position is vacant...Did I miss what you were trying to convey?

As for the original post, I would love to see Matt back in Central Florida. having worked for him when he was Pres of the Cruise Line, I think he is an amazing attribute to whatever area Disney brings him to. I think that it would be a lose for DL as Matt has done a great job over there and I am not a huge fan of Greg Emmer, but I think he would do a decent job. But my opinion does carry bias because WDW is my home :)

MiceAge thinks we get to keep Matt, and drops a few hints about upcoming DL projects.
Matt, and particularly his wife, had made it no secret to friends and coworkers that they really miss central Florida and the better standard of living they enjoyed out there. And so the rumor that Matt might pack up and go back to Florida suddenly made sense to a few people. But the good news is that the rumor has turned out to be wrong, at least for now. While Matt was said to have briefly considered the WDW scenario, he's been adamant with many in TDA that he is staying in Anaheim for the time being and that he is focused on the work he still has cut out for him here.

WDW has hit a major plateau in recent years, and there's a school of thought gaining popularity in Burbank that WDW has almost fully matured and is no longer an area of potential growth for the company. The WDW hotel occupancy rates have been stuck in the 70's for several years now, and the massive marketing campaign trying to tie in with Disneyland's 50th has fallen a bit flat and hasn't driven the expected attendance gains they were hoping for. (We already told you how poorly the "Happiest Celebration On Earth" merchandise was selling out at WDW.)

Anaheim, on the other hand, has surprised Burbank with the incredible strength of the 50th promotion and the record attendance it's brought in. The three Anaheim hotels Disney owns have seen their occupancy rates hover above 95% for quite a while now, and the plans for an additional Disney hotel in Anaheim are moving forward. There's also plenty of work underway, and soon to begin, at DCA as part of the attempt to retheme and rebrand that struggling theme park. Matt is determined to see DCA succeed on its own, rather than just being the extra theme park next door where people go as a consolation prize when Disneyland gets too crowded or when they shut down the turnstiles for the day.

In addition, the popularity of Downtown Disney has continued, and even during the brief recession of '01 and '02 the upscale mall couldn't get people in to its stores and restaurants fast enough every weekend. A major expansion of Downtown Disney is slated to begin just as soon as the 50th events end next year. The west coast premiere of the Disney Cruise Line went over very well this past summer, and it's currently planned as the next location for Disney's third ship, for at least 6 to 8 months out of every year.

And of course there's all of the attention Matt has given Disneyland over the past 24 months, with a major new E Ticket set to open in '07, and plans for an additional Disneyland E Ticket by the end of the decade, plus a few smaller rides and major new entertainment for both Disneyland and DCA. Matt is excited about all of those growth opportunities for the Anaheim property, and he sees a lot of potential in the 30 Million affluent locals who live within two freeway hours of Disneyland, in addition to the very strong numbers Disneyland has seen this year from the western domestic markets like the Bay Area, Portland, Seattle and Phoenix.

While Matt may privately grouse about how much his new smaller house cost, at the same time he sees a lot more opportunity for growth and activity at Anaheim in the next few years than what he sees for the Orlando property. And so for now, we get to keep Matt Ouimet.

Ah, but you missed a few of Al's carefully chosen words that Jim Hill also pointed out:

Whether it's true or not, those little clauses do give me pause. Adds just a bit more credibility to the rumor.

Although -George Bush also said that a court order was required for a wire tap. He said that right here in Buffalo on April 20! But I guess that was just a silly rumor too! ;)
