Bad food in Magic Kingdom 1/25?

Hi all - my daughter and I both got sick the day after Magic Kingdom and I'm trying to figure out what we might have eaten that my wife did not. The only thing I could come up with was Ice Cream / Smoothies at Aunty Gravity's place ... or a burger at Cosmic Ray's. Anyone else have stomach issues after eating there yesterday? Long shot, I know, just wondering if some expired food was being served.

It's too bad, I've never gotten sick eating anywhere in WDW on our previous trips.

Or could have been a virus your wife was lucky enough to not catch. Sorry you were ill. No fun on vacation.

define "sick". fever? nausea? vomiting? diarrhea? etc.

i always have stomach issues at wdw, but it's because i eat stuff i don't eat at home like burgers, fries, tenders, etc.

its highly unlikely that food was the cause. Much more likely that you caught something. I don't get why people automatically assume something is food poisoning when it is last on the list of likelihoods, because they don't like the idea of it being contagious?

Years ago we went to Disney for our second Christmas trip. We booked Cape May for dinner and it was delicious.

A day later my mom was horribly sick. Obviously getting sick after a meal means you...see that meal again. Sorry for the gruesome details.

We immediately assumed it was food poisoning. We ate seafood at a buffet.. it had to be. Then my sister caught a similar stomach virus a mere 2 days later and I rounded things out a day after that. My mom's virus lasted 2 days, my sister's a little over a day and mine was about 12 hours.

Obviously it wasn't food poisoning because food poisoning isn't contagious. However, I can see why it'd be easy to blame it on the food and why the food would be a bit tarnished. My mom, even though it was a simple stomach virus, couldn't eat seafood for a year.

On the other hand, anyone I've ever seen eat a Turkey Leg has gotten sick the next day. Again, could be a coincidence, but I refuse to eat one.

Solid chance is your wife just got sick. It stinks, but you're in close quarters, using public restrooms with people from all over the world carrying all kinds of germs.

Thanks for the responses. To be clear, I'm not saying it definitely was something we ate, but as some background my daughter has an immune deficiency so we're extremely paranoid about germs in general (hand sanitizer after touching anything, using sleeves to touch surfaces, etc.) ... so from that standpoint it's much less likely that we caught a bug (although not impossible with so many people). Further, I have no symptoms except ... intestinal discomfort ... and usually an actual stomach bug would produce many other symptoms for me. Also, I eat roughly the same kind of food normally so it's not a huge change in diet for me in WDW.

In any event I *hope* it's just bad food so we'll feel better the rest of our trip! (And so my wife won't get it.) Don't want to miss any more days...

It could have been something you ate before MK. From what I understand you can get sick up to 3 days after eating something bad.

Also, with all the people from all over the world there it could have been some type of virus even though you are careful. I was on vacation overseas recently and thought I had eaten something I should not have. I was worried before going so I was very careful. It ended up being some virus that the doctors think I had not been exposed to. No one else got sick.

Sorry you and your daughter ended up sick.

Disney has very strict food handling procedures, so the food wasn't expired, but it is possible even in the best of circumstances for food to end up contaminated, though still very unlikely. The raw ingredients could have been contaminated before they ever reached Disney. Hamburger is high on the list of potentially contaminated foods, or it could just be a bug you guys picked up days ago.

Keep your electrolytes balanced with Gatorade or Powerade. I don't recall if anywhere serves either one.

Most people use Purell hand sanitizer. Purell is ineffective against norovirus. A 30 second vigorous soap and water handscrub is the most effective.

People are always quick to assume food poisoning. Do you realize how many people would actually get sick at Disney World if it was foodborne illness? It's not 2 people...it would be more likely to be hundreds, maybe thousands. There would be hospitalizations and stool sample testing for confirmation. You have a virus. Do your wife a favor and try not to give it to her! This means no sharing drinks, utensils, and very good bathroom hygiene habits! Not hand sanitizer!

My post was mainly to see if anyone else had been in MK and gotten sick ... assuming no one else comes forward I'll chalk it up to a virus. But yes, we use the 'good' hand sanitizer. :) Thanks!

Food poisoning would give you more than intestinal discomfort.

Perhaps, the site I looked at (Mayo clinic) simply said any one (or more) of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or cramps ... I had one of those. As others have said, it's unlikely to be food poisoning. I'm feeling fine since my initial symptoms this morning so if it is a virus it's surprisingly short-lived. I just hope my daughter stops throwing up! :(

My wife got food poisoning at CP back on out Christmas trip in 2009/2010, it was New Year's Day, late dinner ADR. She ate something that she thought tasted off, so I avoided it. By the time we got back to CBR, there it was...all night long. By morning, she was wiped out, but not sick anymore. It does happen.

You are right on with that statement! Lots of people use that statement 'loosely' when a food may not agree with them at that time, but it's definitely 'not' food poisoning.

If they have ever had it, they would know for sure! I had it once many years ago from bad oysters - high fever, aches, nearly dehydrated and lasted a week - was nearly hospitalized, and lost 10 lbs. - only weighed 110 to begin with - could keep nothing down or in. In hindsight my Dr. said I should have been in hospital with IV, instead of outpatient treatments.

Was young and healthy then, was thankful for that! So, yes, I get a little 'ticked' when I hear people use a digestive upset from eating a certain food for food poisoning. There is a 'huge' difference.

Agreed that it can unfortunately happen. My Uncle got food poisoning from a Liberty Tree ham sandwich back in the day. He was in the hospital for a couple days. Now I've been going since I was a kid and have never had any problems or had anyone else I know get food poisoning there...but he definitely did.

The one thing you want to make sure you do is go to a doctor and they need to get a stool sample to determine if it was food poisoning. If you seek compensation from Disney, they will want the medical information that confirms the illness.

The poor kid! There is a virus going around our area that is pretty. Nasty for some folks, but "tame" for others. My boss took his adult daughter to the ER, her symptoms were so violent. It went through the office, and all but two of us were ill and needed to stay home. I just felt "off".

I hope that today brings a better day!

.

This is true, although not necessarily 3 days. Different types of bacteria/food poisoning have different incubation times which is part of what makes pinpointing these things almost impossible.

I hope your wife and daughter feel better soon.

Unfortunately I think there is a virus going around everywhere and WDW too. I know we stayed at Pop Century Jan 14th-21st and I ended up sick (vomiting and stuff) the last evening of our vacation. I blamed it on food until my 14 year old daughter became sick 2 days after we were home (probably from me I guess). Hope your family is feeling better soon!

Unfortunately, it can be contagious. "Food poisoning" (which I'm going to loosely define as an acute stomach illness caused by food contaminated with some kind of microorganism) caused by bacteria can be divided into two general categories: food poisoning caused by the bacteria itself, or food poisoning caused by a toxic byproduct of bacteria. If you get the first kind, it can be contagious. The second kind is generally not. Viral stomach bugs are also highly highly contagious.

Thus, if someone in your house has some kind of stomach illness, your best defense against getting it yourself would be to wash your hands often and also bleach the bathroom surfaces that the sick person has touched.

Hope everyone is feeling better soon!
