Bad first impression of the Polynesian

>>>>>>I suppose at those incredibly low paying wages, health insurance is out of the question????

Actually, the health insurance is one of the few reasons people go to work for Disney, since the hourly wages are some of the lowest in the area.

Standards are not slipping they are understaffed. In the past, the garbage would have been emptied so often, no one would have ever noticed.

However when you are short staffed, then things do not get done as often. Possibly you came over just after a very busy time at the restaurant and the staff simply had not had time to empty the trash.

As stated pay is low, hours are long and the competition for workers is great. Orlando has over built its available manpower for these jobs and yet Disney continues to expand.

And before anyone says raise the pay, when you start paying your housekeeping staff more than your clerical, then you have to raise everyone's wages then, before you know it you have to raise the prices of food and rooms, etc. Everyone complains about how expensive it is now, I don't think anyone would support price increases.

The sad thing as Disney continues to expand it is not going to get any better.

I heard a radio commercial a few months back that said the casting building would be open on a Saturday for a job fair, and friends of mine have said Disney has something like 3,000-5,000 open positions. When I first moved to the area, I remember people saying they waited for 2 hours for an interview (with appointment) and were turned away because they weren't "just right".

I think this is one of the main reasons that the newest Disney resort opening soon will be.... a Four Seasons resort.

I actually had lunch at Captn. Cooks yesterday and today, and in the short while i was there both days they were emptying the tash inside captn cooks and outside by the tables. So maybe things are improving.

I am surprised with the overflowing trash issue-what with the intense florida hear and flies, I would think it would become a sanitary issue. Are there not health inspectors that regularly check the parks/hotels for these kinds of situations?:confused3

From what I understand (after reading a recent National Geographic article) is that when Walt Disney purchased the land in Orlando, he made deals with the local and state authorities that exempted WDW from many laws and regulations. The article specifically mentioned that they are not subject to state safety inspections for their rides and attractions. It's possible this could also apply for health inspections.

Not that I think Disney is consciously letting their parks become less healthy or safe simply because they are not subject to state inspections. Walt Disney simply wanted complete control over his World. I'm sure they have their own inspection system. But I thought it was an interesting bit of information about WDW.

The Poly is not alone in this garbage problem. You should see the trash that is allowed to accumulate around Stormalong Bay during busy days. Its no wonder they have a squirrel problem there, lots of goodies for vermin to survive on.

The standards around the park have slipped, resort wide. It's sad.

Definitely vermin around the resorts. We have been staying at Disney resorts since 1981 and have seen good sized rats at the Poly, CBR and POP...but in Disney's defense, over so many years we have seen only a few - with the exception of the Poly where we we saw them scurrying from bush to bush across the path in the mornings when we headed for the MK ..this was so long ago that there was only one park, River Country and the old Discovery Island.

I do wonder how they keep on top of it these days, with all the cutbacks, so much trash everyone. Pretty amazing, really.
