I had a disagreement with my daughter about song Had a bad day by Daniel Power. I said American Idol helped make it popular and she said it was popular way before american idol. She said Idol didn't boost the songs ratings because she & her co workers like the song but don't listen to American Idol. I agree it's a good song on it's own, but it reached a much greater audience being featured on American Idol each week. What do you think?

I never heard of it before American Idol, I like it though!

Not sure, but I think I've heard the song in question and I do not watch AI.

They play the song to death on 3 radio stations that I listen to and I've not turned on AI once this entire season so I have heard it only on those stations.

I didn't even know the guy came from AI until DH told me that's what a coworker said. Was he a finalist or something?

It was definitely a popular song before Idol, but Idol has boosted its popularity tenfold. It's consistently in the Top 5 of iTunes downloads and has a place high on the Billboards charts and it certainly has to do with its appearances on Idol.

Here it made the charts - without American Idol ;)

That song played on all the "american top 40" type stations before it was on AI this week. In fact it is already at #4 on the top 40 countdown that Ryan Seacrest does. It probably will boost the record sales..etc of the song for people who don't listen to those stations, but it was already popular for sure.

Good songs don't need help from AI :thumbsup2

It's been out for quite awhile, and quite overplayed, at least in my area.

I had been hearing the song a ton on the radio before American Idol- I was already tired of it by the time they started playing it on AI!

I'm guessing that it has reached a larger audience just because more people than just top 40 listeners watch American Idol, but it was incredibly popular and overplayed before the show.

This sounds like an argument I would have with my mom- I don't watch AI (well, saw 1 episode) and she does, I listen to top 40 music and she doesn't :rotfl:

Same here. I'm getting so sick of hearing it so many times a day on every station.

Last week was the first week I tuned into AI all season but I've heard the song on the radio many, many times.

According to Daniel Powter (sp), he's never even seen AI, so I doubt he was ever a contestant.

I believe the song was popular before AI.

I have to agree with your daughter that it was popular way before American Idol. To be honest I watch AI everynight and I must have blocked out the song, due to being played to much on the radio already, because I do not remember them playing it. I liked the song alot until they played it into the ground like they do so many other good songs.

Sorry but your daughter is correct! That song was annoying the heck out of me well before AI!

It was popular before AI but I'm sure AI boosted it even higher. I love the song.
And no, Daniel Powter was never an AI finalist.

I guess there is no right or wrong. It was a popular song before, but it got a bigger fan base from being featured on AI.

VH1 had Daniel Powter as a featured artist for at least a month before the song appeared on AI. They played the video about every hour!

But weekly exposure on AI certainly didn't hurt. I'm sure the song found a whole new audience through the show.

I heard it several times before American Idol. It was popular in England before it came here. BTW, iTunes had it as the free download of the week a few months back.
