Depends on a couple of things. Backstage does not guarantee the whale, but Dining does. Also, Dining is later in the day--more like an early dinner. Backstage is around lunch time. We went in June and Backstage was at noon and 2:15 pm. I think Dining was around 4:30 pm. We did Backstage because we wanted to leave Seaworld by 5 pm. It was well worth the money, no matter which one you choose.

Since I have never done Dining, I don't know if they do anything else "special" besides guarantee the whale.

I have the schedule in front of me and as many times as have gone over what to do I never realized that one was a lunch and was at dinner

Our choice is easier now

We really enjoyed Dine with Shamu in June. We had a great table and I was able to get some wonderful pictures. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

BTW our dinner was at 4:45. It was a little early for me but we just had a very light lunch that day.

Ok, I'm confused by what you said about not guarantee the whale. It says the reservations are noon or 2:15 so it's obviously lunch. I copied this from Seaworld.com:

Yes but what the PP was stating by "whale not guaranteed" is the personal encounter like with Dine. Dine the trainers bring the whale up closer so it should (never been myself) make for great pictures of a close up. With the Backstage, they show the making of the movie and yes you get VIP at the show but the trainers don't bring the whale up like they do with Dine. If the whale comes into the area then great, if not, oh well.

Also in Dine With Shamu the trainer comes to each table so you can ask questions.
