Backpack question for First-timer

We will be taking our first trip to Disney in October. I am trying to plan out what to put in our backpack. What are some must have things to back? AND.... What do you do with your backpack while you are riding the rides? Can you take it with you? Thanks for your input.

It just went on all the rides with us. It was mainly filled with bottles of water, juice boxes, camera, and sunscreen.

Let's see....
A small sunscreen, small first aid kit, (moleskin, bandaids, triple antibiotic creme) Hand lotion with sanitizer, hats, cell phone, gum, tissues, wipes, wallet, raincoats...but October you probably won't need them, water bottles/straps, juice bags and snacks.
I plan on not carrying a backpack this winter. I hope we can each carry a fannypack, with the boys carrying thier own water bottle and snacks. We'll see how that works out. As for the rides, we take it on everything. If you ride a coaster, just put it on the floor, put your leg through the arm strap and tuck it under your legs. Your good to go! I like to put snacks and juice boxes in my backpack. Sometimes your in line and getting really hungry. You may want to pack rain ponchos. We always go in summer and it rains a lot. Also any kind of medication(tums, asprin, etc) Wet ones are a good thing to have to wipe off messy hands when your not near a bathroom.

I have never had a problem with taking my backpack on any rides. I wouldn't make it really really heavy because you begin to feel it after a few hours. You may pack things on your first day and realize the next day you don't need them.

Security will check you backpacks before you enter the park. If it has a lot of zippers have them open when you get up to the check point and it will go a lot faster.
