Backpack on a wheelchair?

This board is great -- thanks for all of the advice so far. I first looked here about a month ago, when we realized that my DD11 would need a wheelchair for our Disney trip (7 more days!). She has a broken foot and her cast comes off tomorrow, but she will be in a walking boot through the end of the month and the dr said that she can't stand/walk all day yet, so a wheelchair it is.

I have already rented one through Walker Mobility (thanks to the info on these boards!), but my question is whether I will be able to hang a backpack around the handles? I have a clear plastic (waterproof) backpack, about the size you might use at school, that I would like to bring but it is hot to carry.

I thought it might work if I hung it sideways by looping one of the large straps around both handles. Will this work? Will it still be comfortable to walk behind with the backpack sticking out?

Thanks for the help!

I have had to use a wheelchair in the parks for the last 5 or 6 visits (we use the WDW chairs with a multi-day rental). My DH always puts his backpack over the chair handles, and we've never had a problem. Just don't leave it unattended. He always takes it with him on rides.
Alternatively, if the person pushing the chair finds it is too bulky (do you really need a back pack THAT big?), your DD could hold it in her lap.
Hope you have a wonderful trip:dance3:

we hang the largest size Camelback on the back of mine. no worries, although like was alrwady said we bring it on all rides/attractions that I transfer.

You can hang things easily from wheelchairs. Just a little hint: be careful how much you hang, if not when your daughter stands up the wheelchair may tip over backwards. Karen

Especially important for rental chairs that may not have tip bars.

My DD has used a wheelchair since she was a bit less than 3. W have just used a regular backpack and actually most full time wheelchair users just use regular backpacks because they are less expensive than special wheelchair ones.
Just treat the push handles like shoulders. You may have to shorten or lengthen the straps to make the bag lay the way you want it.

Dito and be carefull what types of straps the bag has and how you hang it on the chair if DD is sensitive in her back. Some of the wider and more "sturdy" straps can be annoying as hell when hanging from your back and wanting to rest against it. No idea how people without my healthissues would experience it, but I find it actually rather painfull.

For yourselfs; some bags can irritate pushers. Seems like my friends and family only complain when there is a bulky bag or a bag with something bulky in it behind me. It causes them to have to walk a bit "bend over" to leave space for the bag or bump into it. Compare it to a toddler on a tagalong board attached to a stroller you're pushing. Basically just another excuse to use the package delivery service and not lug along your own souvenirs. ;)
