trracers - That is the same time our school starts and ends. We start a few days later than you, though, so that's part of the difference.
G & J's Mom - you're right, it would be nice to have those breaks in the fall and winter to be able to plan a trip. Once our school starts, the only long "vacation" we get is for Christmas break, which is still only 7 days, usually. If Christmas falls mid-week, though, it ends up being about 10 days. This is the busiest time at WDW, though, so it doesn't help us!

We have always had a week in March for Spring Break, but this year, they changed it to 2 days in March, and 2 days at Easter. It just gets better and better!

I end up taking DD out of school for one or two days when we travel.
To the posters who mentioned that you have to make up snow days for even "one snowflake,"

! We continue to have school unless the snow is mixed with ice, this year they even attempted to keep school open during an ice storm, but there were several wrecks in the school parking lot, and one school bus had an accident as well(no major injuries, thank goodness!) School officials learned their lesson, and now we have several snow days to make up, too.
