I know that Florida kids go back to school around August 5. What are some other dates from around the USA?

In Missouri, the kids used to go back to school around Labor Day(day before, day after) but lately they have been starting school around Aug. 20 or so.:sunny:

North Carolina is around August 5. TOOOOOOO early!

Back on August 2nd where I live in GA. Dd is starting Pre-K. Oh but they grow up soooo fast. Too fast! :(

All you southerners, do you get a lot of days off during the year, or do you get out of school a lot earlier than we do?! We usually get out around May 26. The only time we get off a lot of days is Christmas break, 7-10 depending on what day Christmas is on, and Spring Break, 5. There are several 3 day weekends during the year, but not a lot.

Just wondering, you guys go back really early!!:earseek:

Our school starts back around August 9 for the students. Teachers go back July 31!!!!:(
We get a week off in October- Fall Break, three days off for Thanksgiving, around 2 weeks for Christmas, Spring Break, and a couple of 4 day weekends in between Christams and Spring Break- like 2 maybe. We are getting out May 21st this year, I think it may be a week later next year.
We are starting way too early!!!

We live in amss adn we went back last year on the 27th i believe but thi\s year we are going back after albor day. We get a x-mas vacation, 4 days for thanksgiving, a winter vaca (Feb), sPRING VACA (APRIL), and we dont get out till mid june. Along with these we get varous random holidays off (IE: columbus day, good friday, vetrans day, memorial day ect) and some thirday weekends......princess:

dizneykid - I hope you don't mind me butting in to your thread, but you asked an interesting question!!::yes::

I wish our school district gave a few more breaks during the school year, then we could go to WDW when the weather, crowds were better. That fall break thingie would be great!!:teeth:

In the New Orleans area it is basically the last week of August, or maybe a little earlier for 1/2 a week. We get out at the very end of May, or sometimes June 1st or so, depending on the calendar.

We get a four day break in Oct. (conferences) only 2 days at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, one week for Mardi Gras (usually in February), a week for Easter, and another four days right before the end of the year for more conferences, with a few days mixed in between here and there.

No, I never mind. I didn't think I would get so much action. I was just curious because my niece gets out at the middle of May and goes back August 5.

My DH thinks they keep shortening the summer break because the schools are trying to go year round. That's his opinion. Boy, that would be a topic, huh?

We were planning on trying a summer vacation at WDW mid August and was wondering the best time to go.

Thanks all for such great info. :D

k&a&c'smom: Sounds like we get about the same days off as you do. We usually get out around May 22 - 25. Just remember though, if it snows at all (dusting) they're closing the schools for the day and that has to be made up on one of our days off.

Our school district (in central Indiana) begins the 3rd week of August and ends the first week of June.

The kids get fall break (2 days), Thanksgiving (2 days), Christmas (2 weeks), spring break (1 week). They generally get 2 days each semester for teacher conferences. And they get the normal holidays - Labor, MLK, President, and Memorial days. There are usually also two or three flex days in the the spring calendar - these are days off unless they are needed to make up for earlier snow days.

We are in FL and go back Aug 16th. Some FL counties go back later than others. We get 3 weekdays off at Thanksgiving, 2 school weeks plus 1 day off at Christmas and 1 week and 1 day for springbreak, plus other assorted holidays. We get out end of May-usually Thursday before Memorial Day.

We live in western NY. Usually the kids start school a day or two after Labor day and don't get out until the 21-24th of June. They have a few 3 day weekends, 10 days at Christmas, and they just had two weeks off for Easter/Spring recess.

PA-most go back just after Labor Day. Our school goes back the last week in August. She gets out this year on 6/12--and that is early in our neck of the woods. Plus we only get a week for xmas, 3days for Spring back, 2 for thanksgiving, and few days here and ther.... Don't you guys have a minimum number of days? I can't imagine being out that early!!

SC students are back the 1st wk in August. Our kids have to go to school for 180 days. We get 3 days for Thanksgiving, 10 days for Christmas, 1 wk for spring break, and the occasional single holiday. If there is one snowflake, we do not have school and make it up later. We will be out May 27 this year. (Teachers have to report 190 days!) I do not want to know when I go back yet.

I think year-round schools would give many of us a chance at less crowded parks and off-season discounts!

In Chattanooga, TN, we go back around the second week of Aug. and get out around May 23 or so. Next year, we will actually have 1 1/2 weeks for fall break (GOING ON DCL!!!), we also have three weeks for Christmas and about 10 days for spring break. We also have various other days sprinkled here and there like Thanksgiving and teacher in-service days.

The students in Pasadena, TX ISD get out May 26th this year. But they go back to school around August 15th, too early! It is sooo hot & humid around here! They get a week off for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week Spring Break in March and 2 days at Easter. Plus a few extra teacher in service days, so they have alot of extra time off during the year. It would be nicer if they started later. I remember in the good old days ;) we didn't go back until the day after Labor Day. Our kids are ready for a holiday by then!

:p

Wow, we would love to be out as early as some of the southern schools. We usually start a day or two after Labor Day, have about a week for Christmas and Easter, off two days for Thanksgiving, and have several 3 day weekends throughout the year. This year we will finish on June 17th. We go 181 days.
