OP, since you seem to be from the UK, (I think I saw that in your post) Labor Day is an American holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September.

We're in NJ and kids go back to school Sept. 8. College kids go back in third week of August.

Aug 4th here in Colorado. Last year they started July 31, so this feels late!

Wow, that is a quite a range posted here: July 20 to September 10. My school district starts the last week of August.

As you can see, it runs anywhere from early August through the Labor Day (first Monday in September...this year is the last Labor Day possible,the 7th), not counting those with a "year round" school calender. A huge chuck of the nation goes back mid August.

Because so many go back by mid-August, and because mid-August marks the beginning of high Hurricane season, late August crowds are usually half the size of early August crowds, but park hours are also noticeably shorter with fewer shows as WDW winds down for their "off season." If you thread the needle right, you can avoid the large summer crowds and avoid the free dining crowds by going the last two weeks before Labor Day (but free dining started earlier this year!). Usually when there at that time, I run into three groups of people...people from the UK, people from New Jersey, and those from my home county in Virginia.

I'm in NJ and for the first time that anyone can remember, they are starting school in my district before Labor Day - Sept 2nd. So now my kids are missing 6 days of school over 2 weeks instead of the first 3 days.

I'm in Va and my county starts Sept 8th but the county next to me (my sister lives in) starts Aug 10th.

I thought you were joking, actually! In Iowa, where I am from originally, state law says that school can't start until after Labor Day, unless a waiver is granted from the state education department for an earlier start, and virtually every district in the state operated under a waiver and started mid-to-late August. So I thought maybe it was the same in Michigan. LOL.

We now live in Minnesota, also have the Labor Day state law, but here it's enforced. So we always start the Tuesday after Labor Day, which is September 8th this year.

It is! I remember that from my years in Vancouver.

The northeast and midwest tend to go back after labor day. we go back after LD this year, the 9th or 10th of Sept. Many many many folks from the Northeast and midwest do end of summer trips to disney. I know of at least 5 families going the first week of Sept this year right before school starts.

August 31st, I'm in the Philly suburbs. It was a late decision by the district to go back before labor day. We get back from our trip Aug 27th.
