My last 2 trips i had to use a ecv because of my knee surgery. I was doing great for about 11 months. My knee decided to flare up again on sunday and we are leaving for disney thursday. :( Was looking forward to not be in the scooter but here we go again. Just hate the looks i get and the comments i get from others when riding the scooter but better that then being in pain for 8 days.:cool1:

for the scooter with a slogan of sorts and say Yes, I really do need a scooter; are you jealous? Have a sign for the front and back of the scooter.

You could get more serious about it, too like saying on the sign I have an invisible disability and yes I do need a scooter.

Mainly, we ignore any rude people ourselves. I never let it bother me. I think you need to grow a thick skin about it.

Actually, in regards to scootering we have never had a rude remark yet. Now, we are very careful and courteous to everyone using our scooter. I will always yield to whatever. It's just better that way.

Aw, sorry to hear it! The silver lining is that at the parks, there are lots of thigns to distract you from pain.

Don't do ths; it's just plain rude.

I'm surprised this is an issue. Who cares if you are using a scooter?

I'm not doing this in a serious way.

I want the OP to feel like they should not care what others may think or say about her use of a scooter.

So is accosting people and demanding to know why they're using a scooter, so is judging people and whispering about them behind their back, so is staring. These people don't exactly have the moral high ground here, and what's the harm in a little educational material?

ETA: Yes, people might feel ashamed, or sheepish when they read it, they might feel bad. In my opinion, they should feel bad about judging people.

It's as if a person with a disability must, if not obviously disabled, be at least pale and stick-thin and preferably badly-dressed as well! I'm relatively young, have RA, and take pains to not "look sick" so my children will not think of me that way, so I get the "There's nothing wrong with you" look on occasion. Sometimes it's more than just a look, which I actually prefer so I can say, "Yes, $4,000 worth of medicine a month really works wonders.":thumbsup2

To be honest, I deal with this far more outside of Disney than in it. Mostly at Disney it's a case of people literally not seeing me, which is odd but remember we are not at eye level, and it can be very crowded. I always rent a scooter for a week, and then I decorate it with Christmas lights and other non-permanent glittery things. I find if I make a "statement" in a non-judgmental and friendly way, the vibe is much better. Either that, or no one is willing to risk glaring at the crazy lady on the scooter! So be loud, be proud and for heaven's sake, do NOT ruin your vacation by hobbling about in pain!!

I've never ever had anyone say anything to me about using a scooter, other than they really liked the scooter or the minnie I attach on the front. For the most part I think if anyone has anything to say it's because they are dead tired or hurting from walking so much and they are envious BUT they could rent one if needed. But most won't.

My BIL just had MAJOR back surgery and he's 65 and his pride he refuses to rent one. I say "go ahead and suffer" if your "pride" hurts you more to ride a scooter. For me it has nothing to do with pride but only to do with even being able to enjoy my trip.

I think your are so worried about others you are seeing looks that aren't really there. Very seldom have I had a problem in Disney I don't look disabled and I am overweight from my issues. I also was doing much better and my last trip didn't use a scooter for the first time in about 7 years it was wonderful to be able to walk. Now however I have other issues and will be scootering on our next trip

Outside of Disney can be a nightmare for some reason Walmart has been the worst. I get lots of comments at Walmart I had to leave the store once because a family followed me around and the father kept saying I was just fat and lazy.

The best thing to do is just don't pay attention to others there are too many fun things to do in Disney to pay attention to unpleasant ones
