Hi again,

Im back in the land of the living following on from my last message from Sanford airport. I have made loads of notes and will post a trip report in due course. In the mean time, her are some highs and lows:

Lows:

Flights there and back - both heavily delayed by 'techincal problems' - 10 hour delay going out there and 6 back. On the flight to Sanford, this meant we landed and picked up our car at 4am instead of in the evening - H had never driven an automatic or on the other side off the road before - that and the fact that he had been awake for over 24 hours made it a very long and nervous drive to our villa (plus wrote of our first day as we were so exhausted)

Going with all my family - not so much a low but I wouldn't go with all my family again. They really couldn't cope with the heat and are all heavy smokers so myself and H were getting a tour of all the smoking zones in the Magic Kingdom!! That was when we decided to break off and do our own thing most of the time and meet up now and again.

Pirates Dinner Show - sorry but I though it was awful - you are told to come 1 1/2 hours before the show and were basically standing about in a holding area before the show. When we went through, the plates and cutlery were filthy, the food was awful and the show was really bad - it was really poorly lit and we couldn't work out what was going on or who was talking as there wasn't any spotlights on them. There is also a lot of violence in this show - not your usual stunt punches but Pirates getting each other on the floor and repeatedly stunt kicking each other in the stomach and jumping on their head!! We had a 3 year old with us and this was not suitable at all for her. (no mention of this when we booked though)

Hurrican Charley: It hit pretty badly - we were lucky - it just tore the pool netting. But there was lots of people without homes, water, electricity. It did affect the holiday - the parks apart form a couple of them were open the next day but not at full capacity - due to staff and CMs having more important things to deal with at their homes. There was also quite a few dead animals including peoples pets by the roads which I found heartbreaking.
The weather never really got back to normal after the hurricane - we had lots of stormy weather after it too and got caught out in the parks a few times and had to go home.

The Highs:

Dolly Parton Dixie Stamped - Loved it!!!! A really good show with loads of talented people and animals - and the food was gorgeous!! creamy veg soup and biscuit followed by chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob and then apple pie - yumm!!! H was dreading going to this but admitted he loved this too!

Bush Gardens - thought this was fab - loads of animals, great rides, shows and plenty for the little uns - plus the gift shops were mega cheap - I got some real bargains and saw the same items in a shopping mall for double the price.

Sea World - for the same reasons as above - absolutley loved it!! - we went here twice.

MGM Studios - loved this too - we booked a Fantasmic Dinner Package and had a fab meal at Hollywood & Vine and then went to see Fantasmic which was brilliant!!!

All in all it was a good holiday but the 2 big dampeners were Hurricane Charley and the weather in general and also the flights out there and back - plus we also had to complain to the management company because they were coming and going to the garage in the villa for storage without telling us about it which I though was out of order.

Would we go back? Yes I think we would - just me and H - maybe 1 week in the keys and 1 week in Orlando doing the bits and pieces we didnt get to do this time.

I do think we tried to take on too much - the parks are so huge and we tried to do them all and eat out and do shopping too - it ended up almost killing us!! I now need a holiday to recover form this holiday!!! LOL!!! How you lot do it with kids, I just dont know!!!

Anyway, full trip reports will be heading your way soon!

Welcome Back

Looking forward to reading your FULL trip report.

So when is your next trip??

Hi Lisa nice to hear your home, it was a shame about the weather keep raining what was the actual tempreture out there? Which airline did you travel with and from which airport? Sorry for all questions just curious as myself, husband and 2 kids are going out there soon.

Many Thanks

Hi Lisa

Welcome home.

We are also going with family in November and I have a feeling I too will be seeking out the smoking zones in the Parks.

I'm glad you had as many highs to match the lows!

:wave2:

hi lisa

so sorry to hear about your delayed flights we went with thomas cook and got delayed 1 hour which was bad enough. The thing with wdw is you can spend hours planning your days etc but the heat and crowds can be so tiring. I thought it was very busy this year and so hot too. Also when you get back it seems to take about a week to get over the hoiday!!!!!

keep smiling

Welcome back Lisa!!

Gosh, that was rotten luck on your flights. I can totally sympathize with your hubbie - that first drive must have been a nightmare.

I think you did exactly the right thing letting your family get on with it (or not as the case may be :)) and going off on your own.

I've never done the Pirate show so can't comment on that - but this sort of show isn't really my type of thing anyway. Glad you enjoyed Dolly though!

As for Charlie - well the only thing you can say is :( :( :( for al sorts of reasons.

It is really easy to end up doing too much especially on your first visit. I know we didn't get half of what we wanted to do done when we went with our DD's the first time. But sometimes it's better to only do half the stuff but really enjoy what you do! We certainly spent a lot more time than we had planned in Typhoon Lagoon thanks to my 6 year old!

Would love to hear more when you are recovered from jetlag!

Cheers

Karen

Hi Lisa

Welcome home

Glad to hear that you have not been put off going back:)

Glad you're back safely.
Pity about the delayed flights - and sitting out a hurricane must be pretty scary?

Lisa,
I totally agree with you about the pirate show, we thought it a complete wste of time and money!!!!!!!!!

Lisa,

Glad you had a great holiday.

Welcome back:hyper: I think it sounds a good idea not to go away in a big family group again:earseek:

Thats a good 'head up' about the Pirate show,thanks::yes::

Hi lisagirly,
we had a four hour delay going out last year, and twenty four hour delay coming back! I felt exactly like you, loved it but wanted a relaxing holiday, within a week of being back I booked two weeks all inclusive in tunisia for may o4, as I really needed a lounge about by the pool holiday, although I enjoyed it, i wish i had waited and would probably booked florida instead, the buzz you get from being there is amazing and has spoiled everywhere else for me for a few years at least. I cant wait til next may and am watching my countdown tick too slowly.

its like childbirth, after a while the agony fades and you can only remember the good bits!

Welcome home Lisa!

Glad you enjoyed most of your break. Its hard to go with family sometimes, especially if they want to do things you dont (like smoke in your case!). Another trip back with just you and hubby would be lovely.

Looking forward to your trip report.

i hope people notice your comment about trying to do too much..
i see it in many posts on this board....i think perhaps because brits come from relatively far away, they feel they need to do everything....
that is such a mistake....the great thing about WDW for my family is just slowing down and enjoying all the little stuff....(on our trip this july, we spent 20 minutes or maybe it was a half hour, listening to the barbershop quartet on main street of the MK....my kids refused to leave as long as the quartet was singing...they loved it....little things like that make WDW enjoyable for us..)
we've spent 3 weeks in orlando and basically not done anything besides WDW (including fishing, biking, boating, etc.)...

i just saw someone's post who's going to orlando for one week and wants to go to WDW, sea world, and universal...i just had to laugh....they'll drop dead on the ground and will totally not enjoy their stay if they attempt that...

anyway...
sorry you had to go through charlie...not something you bargained for i'm sure...

as for the heat......i guess your best bet would be to avoid orlando in the summer.....we manage ok, but we live in the middle east, so it's not really much of a change for us (although the humidity can really wipe you out)....

thanks for the report....it was very interesting (reminded me about how much i love the smokefree air of WDW......not something you find much of where we live....even in supposedly non-smoking areas.....)
