Back from Our Vacation - Here is Our Dining Report - US/IOA/WDW - DDP

Such incredible Pixie Dust! I love when something awesome happens to good people! I think those of us that don't expect such things end up with it happening to them for a reason!

Great start... Loving the reviews!

What did you all think of HDDR? Would you do it again?

Thank you!!!
I love the HDDR...and I would/will go back. But we went in 2010 and again in 2011 and personally, I remembered the jokes and humor too well and wasn't laughing quite as much as I did in 2010. We will probably not go back in 2012 or 2013. But I know we will go back some time...

BTW - I am also loving your dining review and saw that you get to go again in a few weeks - with such awesome suprises, too! Hope you get pixie dusted from head to toe!!! :wizard:

Wow love all the pixie dust that you guys got and am glad it helped in making your trip extra special! :wizard:

I'm also glad you enjoyed HDDR!

Fantastic reports scanne! I love the pixiedust: pixiedust at WL!

It has been at least 10 years since I have been to HDDR, and your review reminds me that I may need to go there again some trip soon!

Wonderful reviews and pictures :goodvibes

The CMs at WL really are the best :worship:

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your dining adventures popcorn::

So today was our first full day in WDW and the day that, in my mind, we officially began our DDP. We were staying for 8 nights, so we had 8 TS, 8 CS and 8 snacks per person. When we got our print out at check in, it showed that we had 16 adult TS credits, 16 children TS credits, 32 counter service credits and 32 snack credits.

Hmmmmm, why did they lump all the counter service credits together? :confused3
Well, it turned out that my kids were able to order full size counter service meals at Columbia Harbor House, Liberty Inn, Roaring Fork and a few others. Apparently, there was no differentiation between child and adult meals when using the dining plan....has anyone else encountered this? Is this common knowledge that I didn't know of? Thoughts?

OK, so we began our day with breakfast at Roaring Fork. DH does not eat breakfast. I do, but don't like to eat heavy that often - but in WDW I will occasionally get a breakfast croissant.

This morning, I opted to use a snack credit for oatmeal (no pic, sorry), and my kids wanted the Chocolate Lovers Mickey Waffles. The kids' breakfasts were $4.99, so I decided to pay OOP for these.

CIMG7380.jpg

These were made fresh and came with whipped cream, chocolate chips and chocolate sauce, but my kids didn't want the sauce. They both got bacon and applesauce, although later we learned we could get grapes.

My mom got the kids breakfast plate which had scrambled eggs, bacon and she got the grapes.

All kids meals came with a small drink. We got the smaller bottles of water and got hot cocoa/coffee in our mugs (we bought 2 mugs since they weren't included in the DDP).

CIMG7381.jpg

Breakfast is breakfast, IMHO, and this breakfast was fine. Everything was fresh. The bacon (and I am not a bacon fan) was a bit soggy, so even if I did eat bacon, I would have turned this bacon away.

The kids loved the waffles and got them 3 or 4 more mornings, only changing the flavor once.

Up next, lunch at Columbia Harbor House and dinner at La Hacienda.

We were at the MK today and spent a lot of the morning on the Haunted Mansion. Quick backstory - DS has been afraid to go on the HM since he turned 4. But before then, he had ridden with DH on all of our trips - and we took a lot of trips from 2003-2007. But on our Halloween trip in 2006 (I think it was that year) his imagination kicked into high gear and MANY fears were born. Each subsequent trip we tried to get him to ride but he always adamantly said no.

This year things changed. Prior to going on our trip, DS did a lot of "research." AKA - YouTube videos of rides he was uncertain of including HM, POC and Jungle Cruise. DH and I weren't convinced he'd ride any of these, so DH devised a prize plan. AKA - BRIBING HIM WITH LEGO SETS IF HE'D RIDE THESE RIDES! :rotfl:

I was skeptical....however, I am happy to say that I was wrong and DH's plan worked (along with DS's extensive research).

SO we spent the morning riding and re-riding the HM. I think we rode it about 4-5 times in a row before we realized we were hungry and wanted lunch.

That brings us to Columbia Harbor House.

This is where I discovered that we could get a regular CS meal with a child credit.

My mom and dad both got the BLT salad. (Sorry the picture isn't that great).

CIMG7387-1.jpg

DH got the fish and chips platter.

CIMG7384-1.jpg

DD got the tuna sandwich.

CIMG7383-1-1.jpg

DS got the chicken nugget platter. Sorry, I don't have a picture of the chicken nugget platter, but there a few nuggets on my dad's salad in the picture above. ;)

I had the fried shrimp platter. There were a ton of shrimp and they were very tasty and not greasy at all. I very rarely eat fried shrimp, but hey, vacation brings about a whole other set of rules!

CIMG7385-1.jpg

For dessert, we got one chocolate cake, four apple crisps and subbed a dessert for a bottle of water. DS didn't want dessert.

The chocolate cake was ok - nothing special. But the apple crisp was delicious! It was still warm, not overly sweet and the crust was perfect. What would have made it even better would have been a scoop of vanilla ice cream. ;)

CIMG7386-1.jpg

I like Columbia Harbor House because it is not as hectic as Pecos Bills or Cosmic Rays. However, most of their items are fried and the salads are premade, and I am picky about what goes in my salad. The options are a bit different that typical fast food (no burgers) such as the hummus sandwich and tuna sandwich, and the apple crisp dessert was much better than the pre-packaged cakes and cookies offered at other CS locations.

Would I return to CHH? Yes, but probably not in the next trip or two. There are other CS locations I haven't even tried yet at MK.

What a wonderful surprise that was left in your room! I'm really enjoying your reviews!

We got to La Hacienda 15 minutes before our 7:30pm reservation. I checked us in and recieved a pager. The hostess asked about our party size - and I told her 4 adults and 2 children. I didn't think anything of it or of getting a pager because we were early and there were some other families waiting to be seated.

Well we waited.

And waited....

And waited....and we were not seated until 8pm.

When we walked in to the restaurant (we were waiting outside) the seater greeted us, took our slip and said, "Party of 9? 4 adults and 5 children?"

I said, "No, we are a party of 6 - only 2 kids."

Well after a few more minutes, we were led to a table.
A table for 9! And there were about 5 tables for six sitting empty. I think part of the wait was due to an error by the hostess that keyed us in as a party of 9. My DH - who doesn't usually get upset - was a little annoyed. Now there were other factors at play. The kids (the 2 of them ;)) were incredibly hungry and getting tired and were acting a little silly. My mom and dad were hungry and tired and my mom had a headache and the kids were not helping. DH and I were hungry, but we were also trying to calm everyone down, to no avail. It was not a good start to our meal.

We had a very kind server - Esmerelda - and she promptly brough us chips.

CIMG7401-1.jpg

There were two salsas - a green and red. Both were good. The green was mild and flavorful, the red had heat and nice spice. I liked them both.

DD ordered the kids salad and the kids chicken tacos.

CIMG7404.jpg

CIMG7409.jpg

DS had the fruit cup and the kids chicken tenders which came with rice.

CIMG7406.jpg

CIMG7410.jpg

The kids portions were nicely sized. DD's food was excellent. DS is picky and maybe ate 1 chicken tender and no rice or green beans.

DH and I shared the Del Mar which was scallops, shrimp and tilapia. Originally the platter was supposed to have snapper but we asked if they'd sub the tilapia and they did. The entree came with rice, beans and corn tortillas. PLENTY of food for the two of us.

CIMG7412.jpg

My parents both got the steak. It was very good as well, as we all tasted a bite of each others meals.

CIMG7411.jpg

I also had the avacado margarita. Now, I do not like avocado or guacamole, so what possessed me to order this $13.00 drink, I'll never know. But I am glad that I did! It was YUMMY! Sweet, smooth, a slight hint of lime and the tequila was not overpowering. Soooooo good.

CIMG7407.jpg

Now, although our waitress was very sweet and attentive, the service of getting the food to the table was SLOW SLOW SLOW!!! DH was not happy at this point - we weren't given our food until 9pm. The reason I know this is because we got our food and Illuminations started. So we had been sitting for an HOUR before our meals were served.

DH did speak to a manager and they comped my margarita. We were on the DDP, so I thought that was fair and very nice of them.

Also, you can sort of see Illuminations from La Hacienda. They do dim the lights and pipe the music in, which was nice. You can't really see the globe from all the seats, but I think there were some window seats that would give you a nice view. There didn't appear to be anywhere to walk outside to watch the show.

For dessert I had a chocolate creamy thing. It was ok. I don't remember the name of it, but I know it was just ok. The kids had the churros and DH had the guava tamale I think.

CIMG7414.jpg

CIMG7415.jpg

My dad ordered the same thing as me and I don't remember what my mom had and I can't find a picture, so maybe she had the same thing as well.

So overall, I did like La Hacienda and I would go back to give the service another chance. The food was delicious and if you're looking for a more authentic mexican meal (as opposed to Don Pablos or On the Border), you will be pleased with the offerings. Everything was fresh and flavorful and the servings were more than adequate.

So we will probably go back to La Hacienda in the future, but maybe not on our very next trip.

Loving your reviews! We absolutely LOVE HDDR and will be there on Wedsnesday night! And your review of La Hacienda made me feel better. We don't care too much about the service, as we don't mind sitting for a long time, but I am worried about the food. That plate you ordered and the steak look great. I had one of those avocado margaritas last year and it was absolutely :cloud9:! Can't wait to have another (and if the service is slow...I'll have 2 ;)).

Thanks for taking the time to review. Glad you liked the food at la hacienda . We are trying it for the first time in oct. Looking forward to more.

La Hacienda's food was excellent. Hopefully you will have better overall service! Enjoy! And thank you for reading!

Yes, those margaritas are so good! Have fun on your trip!

I'm joining! I enjoyed reading your review.
I'm glad that your meal at La Hacienda was good (at least food). That will be our first TS meal coming trip. La Hacienda's kids meal has hardly any review so I wasn't sure of it. DS loves Nachos so he would probably get that but it's nice to see that portions size is good.

Yes the portions for the kids meals were great! And I do believe they had nachos on the kids menu....

Our breakfast this morning was once again, oatmeal (snack credit) and kids waffles (chocolate again).

Lunch was at 50's PTC. We always ask for Aunt Claire. The last couple of times, including this time, she was not there. We had our brother "Bobby." Ironically, my dad's brother's name is Robert and I always called him Bobby.....

Our beverages were diet coke with vanilla, vanilla coke for DS, water for my mom and DD (they added crystal light), my dad had pomegranate lemonade and DH drove Bobby a little crazy with his drink order: 1/2 coke, 1/2 diet coke with a splash of cherry AND a splash of vanilla. ;)

Entrees:
DH and I both had the grilled chicken sandwich with side salads.

CIMG7438.jpg

CIMG7439.jpg

My mom had the stacked sandwich with chips.

CIMG7441.jpg

My dad had the grilled chicken caesar salad.

CIMG7442.jpg

The kids both started with chicken noodle soup.

CIMG7429.jpg

DD had the kids fish which was salmon.

CIMG7440.jpg

DS wanted the fried chicken, but it isn't on the menu. BUT, I asked Bobby if there was a kids portion of the fried chicken and there was, so that is what DS had. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes. (I got the potatoes as he doesn't like them - they were delish!).

CIMG7437.jpg

Desserts:
My mom and had the Boston Cream Pie Parfait.

CIMG7445.jpg

My dad had the no sugar added cheesecake.

CIMG7446.jpg

DH had the smores.

CIMG7447.jpg

The kids had the make your own sundaes.

CIMG7444.jpg

Overall, this meal was good. It wasn't stellar and the antics from our brother were not over the top. We enjoyed the meal, it wasn't rushed, the food was tasty and the drinks were refilled without having to wait. I do really like the theming of this restaurant and like to visit it every other year or so. I think in the future, I will go for dinner and not lunch.

I did really love the dessert, though. The Boston Cream Pie Parfait is huge and very tasty! It wasn't too heavy, but I still was unable to finish it. It had pieces of cake and chocolate and vanilla pastry cream and some whipped cream on top. The smores are always good, but I can only take one marshmallow as I find them too sweet. I didn't taste the cheesecake. I guess it was good as my dad did finish it.

Up next, Wolfgang Puck Express for dinner.

After our lunch at Prime Time, there was a massive storm and we got stuck waiting under the awning of the restaurant for 30 minutes. It makes me go :confused3 when people play in puddles and splash while there is thunder and lightening literally right over them. Seriously, it was bad and there were all these kids playing in huge puddles. :scared1:

So after the storm passed, we did a few more things in the Studios - namely TOT and RNR which my 7 year old DD tried for the first time and LOVED them both! She was so proud of herself and so excited that she rode the big rides.

We had decided to meet my parents (who left after the storm) and my aunt and uncle at Downtown Disney that evening. My aunt and uncle had flown in that morning and we were going to try to coordinate some of our touring with them.

DH and I decided to take a bus to Port Orleans and then take the boat from there to DD. We didn't realize that the boat ride itself was about 20 minutes, but in hindsight, we were glad we chose this option. We had a great boat captain and we chatted with him the whole way to DD. Also, our DS really took a liking to POR and we have booked it for next summer in one of the new Royal Guest rooms. :thumbsup2

When we got to DD, we met everyone at WPE. It wasn't too crowded and we got in line.

Here is what we ordered:
I had the margharita with fresh mozzerela, roma tomatoes and basil and a creme brulee.

CIMG7454.jpg

CIMG7457.jpg

DH had the bbq chicken pizza without cheese and a brownie.

CIMG7458.jpg

Brownies and cookie:
CIMG7451.jpg

DS and DD had kid pizzas - one plain and one with pepperoni.

CIMG7456.jpg

CIMG7455.jpg

My mom had the spaghetti and meatballs and my dad had the rotisserie chicken and mashed potatoes.

CIMG7460.jpg

CIMG7459.jpg

They both had creme brulee as well.

I love WPE and think it is an incredible value on the DDP. The food is excellent and the portions are huge! It is on our must-do list every time we go to DD. The food is very fresh and flavorful and they were very accomodating to DH who wanted his pizza with out cheese. If you've never had WPE, please try to get there and try it out. It is so worth it!!!

Next up - Fantasmic lunch package at Mama Melrose and the worst rain we've had in WDW in years....

Really enjoying your reviews!

Universal was my first love and we've always taken our family vacations there. So glad you got to try butter beer and Mythos!

I'm so glad to read a great review of the regular DDP. We had the DxDP on our honeymoon and it really was to much food if I'm honest with myself. We're going back with free dining in February with the DDP.

Thanks for the time and effort! I'm loving it and can't wait for more!

(Question- Did you find the 1 snack credit to be enough for your family? I'm wondering if I need to budget for more OOP snacks?)

Yes one snack per person per day was plenty and we still had 8 snack credits left on our last day. With all the desserts with both the QS and TS meals, we really didn't want anything else to eat.
