I know what you mean about the mattress not being flush to the bed but that is the way it is designed. The mattress is kind of placed into a "tray". However, it seems if you found the bed so uncomfortable and felt the gap was larger than it should be, there must have been something wrong with the bed -- maybe the fram had been damaged and was out of alignment?
